    stainless/chrome cooker hood and splashback

For the sticky residue try nail polish remover with acetone. For the sticky fingermarks, welcome to the world of brushed stainless steel.

getting cars home from auction legally

I would think that whether the insurance co is happy or not is vital. No mot, no tax, gets you a fine. Being sued for damages after an incident on the road, after your insurance co declines to pay up, could cost you everything you have. Whilst it may well be OK to drive the untaxed/unmot'd...

    A small but strange phenomenon

Ta, I wish that Bosch had included small battery or backup in their clocks so they didn't have to be reset after a power outage of more than a few secs. And auto GMT/BST switching, it must cost pennies to provide that.

    A small but strange phenomenon

In our kitchen we have three appliances incorporating electrical digital clocks. We also have, but not in the kitchen, overhead power supplies. On the occasions when we lose power for a while the clocks have to be reset and more or less synchronised, which is a pain. Yesterday, in a...

    New York

And after last night's C4 programme, go to 23 Wall St and look at the shrapnel damage in the masonry after the world's first car bomb exploded. I have never seen this mentioned in any tourist books. Go on the Staten Island ferry, it's free and passes the Stat of Lib. Oh what the heck, get a...

    Supplier of swimming pool fencing?

It is, I believe, security fencing around a pool which is mandatory in many countries and will probably be so here shortly. No I don't know, but any reasonably robust steel fencing would probably do. I'm sure there are some examples to be Googled from Australia and possibly France.

Thomas Dudley Vantage Dual Flow Concealed Cistern

I believ the push button to cistern connection is pneumatic through quite small diameter plastic pipes. I should check these for fit and air-leaks. Can't help on the cistern overflowing. (I have one of these contraptions, also about 4 years old.)

    Oil Tank Installation

Ah, I see what you mean, the slabs will go sideways on. I should still advise a fourth slab at the business end so that the poor delivery driver has something to stand on. An overhang also protects the valve, filter and pipework that stick out at the pointy end, as indeed a larger platform tends...

    Oil Tank Installation

I'm totally bemused by the three slab method, and indeed both of the diagrams. The tank platform should be at least large enough to support the entire base of the tank, which is going to be very hard to do with three 900 x 600 slabs. (Your tank is 1803 x 1118 mm.) We had a raised tank...

NEFF electric oven glass viewing panel

I would very much doubt that. Ther are VH temp sealants, such as item 360073022183 (1200 deg) and item 230273368352 (300 deg) on ebay, but whether they have the adhesive capabilities to hold the glass panel is another matter (they seem to be more sealants than adhesives).

NEFF electric oven glass viewing panel

<..I'm a great fan of Araldite. Would that adhere, and withstand 200*C?..> No. One way of breaking an Araldite joint is by heating it up. I would contact the manufacturers for advice regarding the sealant, or have a word with a local electrical appliance service/sales shop. It looks as if...

Hanging kitchen wall cabinets with 18mm back panel

Yes, those are the things. An excellent fitting, but I'm glad mine were prefitted to the cabs. I wouldn't fancy drilling those dowel holes.

Hanging kitchen wall cabinets with 18mm back panel

They do exist. I have cabs with 18 mm backpanels, and they are fitted with robust hangers that are adjustable - from an approx 15 mm hole in the panel - for height and clamp-back-to-the-wall-ness. Unfortunately I don't know who supplies them, they came already fitted, and I'm not going to remove...

    Weeping Joints

Wrapping anything around the thread on a compression or flange joint (such as a tap connector) is counterproductive. The water will be escaping either from the contact point of the olive and the fitting body or pipe, or from the contact point of the flange and the tap/ball valve etc. The thread...

Is caulk like silicone sealant? Am I thick of what...

Well, I'm no chemist, but I've found that caulk can shrink a little, dries hard, and can be overpainted, so no, it isn't the same as a silicone sealant. Caulk is generally used for filling those little gaps during internal decorating. Silicone sealant is used where a little movement may occur...

confess, what printer have you got?

I have an HP 950C, about eight years old, chunters away dependably. I used to buy compatable carts, and use Cartridge World, but I have had seating trouble with these, so I use the pukka HP carts now, discounted at Wilkos. After a best buy recommendation in some pc mag, my wife bought a Canon...

Gap above window frame, what do i need to do b4 painting?

For occasional use get the cans with the plastic 'gun' attached, not just the spray tube. After use the tube is bent back and plugged into a stopper on the gun. I used to use the cans once then throw away, but with these guns you can use all the contents of the can weeks later. I also need to...

Fitting a kitchen - the corner is not square

You could try cutting away the plaster in a tapered manner into both sides of the corner for the cab rear edges and worktop edge, so that the square cabs sit slightly inside the oversquare corner. Maybe you will make 50 mm, or at least some of it.
