    wild weed

Any chance of a picture? What shape of leaves does it have, are they grass like or broadleaf like? Which ever type it is glyphosate (roundup) is the answer because it is taken down into the roots and will kill the plant from the bottom up. If you need to protect other plant close by or grass...

    Feeding a new lawn

You're keen! I would leave it at least 6 weeks maybe 8 weeks. I am presuming that you fed the soil before laying the turf? If you feed it too much at this stage it will not have the root structure to take up the nutirients and so most of it will be leached from the soil anyway...

    Lawn Grasses

If you want a bowling green type appearance then you will need to lift and relay. I would also apply glyphosate before lifting to kill the creeping type of grass which will just poke through your new lawn, things such as cooch grass etc. Lifting and relaying is the only way to control the grass...

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

I would make the hole about the size of the block or pillar you intend to use at each point and make it about 12'' deep and fill with concrete or use a bag of postcrete, much easier and quicker to dry. Also no need for mixing. Then build your blocks on top of that to the desired height. Andrew

    dismantling a greenouse

It is easy if you know how! As long as you are a keen diy person then it should not be too much trouble for you. First make a drawing of the greenhouse and mark each pain of glass with a number, use a waterproof pen (this can be taken off with alcohol when it is reinstalled. Then remove all...

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

You could just put it on the shingle and do the posts after. Although it would not take more than half a day to concrete in some posts or some blocks. If the deck pieces come ready made then not more than a day for the job in total. If you are having a barbie and have lots of people on the...

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

Presuming that you are constructing the decking on concreted in pillars, then yes this is actually the ideal situation. The membrane will ensure that no weeds grow through and the gravel will ensure that there is limited splash of dirt from rain dripping off the timbers. Andrew

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

That is an absolute classic! PMSL   As long as you learn from this adventure then you will be stronger next time, alternatively do not hang on to stuff that you do not need any longer! I must say that not too sure I would want smoke alarms without a battery back-up, what...

    Mushrooms in lawn

Must say, can not see how you can say I have repeated what was said, some differences are subtle maybe, but 'the devil is in the detail' Reading through the tread the poor guy could have been chasing his tail and breaking his back. If you want some background info in how a fungus works and...

    Mushrooms in lawn

I am sorry to say but this thread is full of mistakes, sorry. Mushroom farmers use the compost only once because mushrooms require very high nutrients to grow well and so after one crop the level of nutrients drops below the level required and so it is sold off as mushroom compost. At this...

    Mains powered Smoke Alarms

That probably means that the battery backup is duff as when the batteries get low they chirp every minute or so. This means that you get a reminder to change the battery before they run out completely. Andrew

    Loft flooring/Insulation - Condensation issues

Hello, I would like to floor my loft, I already have loft insulation in place. The problem is that the loft insulation sits about approx 3'' above the 5'' joists. Is it OK just to floor over this and squash it down or will this lead to condensation problems? I will not be flooring the full...

    Outside taps

Ah, you have been lured in and shown a link to the product, watch as Screwfix turnover jumps as everybody buys a DIY tap kit  If you are a plumber, how difficult it is to fit a tee! I could do it and would do it in preference to this tat and I am not a professional plumber, just a...

    Outside taps

If I was a more cynical man I would say that somebody has paid you to "big-up" screwfix tap kits. I see no problem or issue to solve in your post. Come on, own up you are working for Screwfix and you are a dirty forum lurker

    Tomato terminology

Tomato plants grow in levels, and each level is called a truss which consists of one or maybe 2 sets of flowers and then fruit which comes from the same level on the plant. Then you would normally get another layer of leaves and then another truss. A truss will have a varying number of...

Erecting wooden lap fence and posts, help!

The best way to do this it to use concrete, it will make a more sturdy fence and it is easier to get straight. If you hit a stone when driving in the metal post then it will make the post will be twisted when you attach it, also the metal spikes will require painting if you do not want them to...

New Kids Playhouse requires a base ??

I would suggest that if you want to playhouse to remain level for some time to come, then some concrete or well compacted sub base under the concrete blocks would be advisable. About 4 inches would be fine, just under the block itself. I would aslo recommend laying some landscape fabric...
