    Just another update. It seems the taps are unsuitable for a gravity fed system. We changed the taps over and that helped the situation. Thanks to all for your comments.

    Thanks to all. This is a flat that we rent out so I will not be there for a while but there are a couple of useful suggestions that I can try out. I think the most probable is the flexible hose suggestion. I'll let you know.
