Just another update. It seems the taps are unsuitable for a gravity fed system. We changed the taps over and that helped the situation. Thanks to all for your comments.

An update on the position. We've had another plumber come in to look at the system and he says that the slow running water is due to single taps being replaced by mixer taps. His suggestion is to add a pump to the hot water supply and the rising main to the cold water supply. Do you think this...

Thanks to all. This is a flat that we rent out so I will not be there for a while but there are a couple of useful suggestions that I can try out. I think the most probable is the flexible hose suggestion. I'll let you know.
