Thank you for your prompt reply. I know what you mean about the braided hose. I was looking for that myself !! My other boilers have the braided hose and are simple to fill up and return the pressure. I don't live at the property so can't take more photos. But here's another photo taken - sorry...

can anyone please tell me which valves I need to open to fill up a vaillant turbo max 828e?

oddly enough that company has asked me to send them photos of the whole wc. I'll add the photos here just in the remote chance that someone can identify it. I'm not a plumber so I can't comment on replacing the whole cistern but I would have thought that I would have the same problem with matching.

had a look on search engines but no luck; point taken about complete new cistern but potentially retiling etc. I've sent some messages to cistern parts people; we'll see what they say

the manufacturer's number is 6684. Does this ring any bells?

probably 20 years plus. You're might be saying that it has gone past its normal working life & you'd be correct. replacement of the basin is not a big issue just potential retiling and then it makes the rest of the bathroom shabby.

I've had a look through the posts on how to fix marks on the surface of a ceramic wash hand basin and there is a mention of using an enamel / bath rubber. Do you think my scratches / marks (photo attached) are too bad to use this method? What about using t-cut or brasso?
