    Advice with shelves

Hi we're putting up some shelves in a brick built cupboard and I'm after some advice on materials. The shelves will fit the width of the cupboard at 1090mm and will be 300mm deep. I was going to use timber around the three edges to baton it. The shelves need to take a fair bit of weight...

    Water-based undercoat - rusty

I've managed to scoop some out to use for now but it is not just a couple of flakes, it's covered in them and I know as soon as I put the lid back on it I have to do the same each time I use it. Can you buy a plastic replacement can from anywhere, I've found some small ones on the net but...

    Water-based undercoat - rusty

I have a tin of Homebase water-based primer and undercoat, and the lid has gone rusty and left flakes in the paint. Any idea why it's gone rusty? It's not the first time it's happened, and I've always kept the tin in the house. Is there any way of straining the paint to get the flakes out?

    Prep for water based Satin

Hi We are repainting our skirting in water based satin (I think either Johnstones Aqua or Sikkens Satura), I've sanded it down and in a few places I've had to go down to the bare wood to get a flat surface. Would this need a primer or can I just use undercaoat? I've got some Homebase...

    Water based gloss or satinwood

Thanks Stef99 I've already invested in a pack of Purdy brushes, we have a whole house to do so I thought it was worth it. I guess if the paint is easy to use that might help speed me up, do you have any tips for painting doors? Is it best to paint the panels first or does it not really matter...

    Water based gloss or satinwood

Hi looking for some advice on water based paints for skirting and doors, from reading on here it seems that Johnstones aqua is a good one to go for; but most of the posts mention the gloss being good and I think we may go for a satinwood. Is the Johnstones aqua satinwood as good as the gloss...

Are cutting in brushes easier to use for cutting in?

After buying the Hamilton Vantage and not liking it I thought I may as well spend extra and buy the Purdy ones as we have a whole house to decorate. Which set would be a good all rounder I have found both Purdy Monarch Elite and Purdy Elite Precision on amazon both a set of 3 brushes 1", 1...

Are cutting in brushes easier to use for cutting in?

I've got a Harris Finesse brush set, they seem quite good, not sure buying purdy would be make a huge difference to the quality of my painting but I could be wrong . Am I right in thinking the angled brush would get in corners better? I best get practicing :)

Are cutting in brushes easier to use for cutting in?

Hi Do Cutting in brushes, the angled ones, make cutting in any easier? Our previous home had picture rails so never had difficulty with where the ceiling met the wall as they were painted the same colour, this house doesn't so they will be different colours and I'm worried about screwing it...

    Help with surface socket switch

This may be a stupid question but what about the earth wire as it is bare does it need to be sleeved, if I accidently touch the wire while working round it would I get an electric shock?

    Help with surface socket switch

Hi I need to remove a surface socket switch and make the live wires safe to work around, can this be done and how? The earth doesn't appear to be sleeved either. The reason I can't just leave it turned off via the circuit breaker is that my other half works from home and needs his PC and monitor...

    Advice on decent painting tools

We have recently moved and the whole house will eventually need decorating so thought it was a good time to invest in some half decent stuff. We've used both paint pads and rollers in the past, which normally give the most professional finish and is it worth buying the more expensive ones...

Can this motion sensor light be rewired?

I don't really want to remove it if possible, just bypass the motion sensor so when you turn the light on it stays on.

Can this motion sensor light be rewired?

Hi We have a motion sensor light in our bathroom, the light is rubbish and it is very difficult to get it to stay on for more than about 20 seconds, the sensor doesn't seem to pick up the area's we are mostly in such as the shower. I have tried to adjust the time it stays on for which only...
