Burning holes in plastic feed tanks

I'm just curious. Whilst strolling through B&Q, as one does, I noticed that the instructions on plastic cold water feed tanks said Do not use a hot tube to cut a hole in the tank. When I fitted these things, many years ago, I used a heated copper offcut to 'cut' the holes, and a wonderful...

Can you see BBC web pages abroad?

Oh I dunno. He's far younger than me and always building pc's and networks and installing Linux and stuff. I can't really say what his trouble is, in fact I don't know anything more than he was complaining that he can't get BBC news. I'll pass on the comments here, ta.

    Vented Hot Water Cylinder

As it is a combined vent and expansion pipe it should be run so that any air, and indeed any water that is pushed or blown out of the h/w cylinder, can freely pass up through the pipe and out over the feed tank. Vertical is best, 45 deg OK, horizontal a no-no. Trapped air will cause noise and...

Can you see BBC web pages abroad?

Thanks, John. I have indeed spent considerably more than 12 secs searching, but as BBC occurs a great many times in web pages it is difficult to find the correct info. True, I didn't look at the Wannabes web pages, whatever they are, but this refers to streaming programs abroad, not what I asked...

Can you see BBC web pages abroad?

A friend of ours who has moved to Sweden says that he can't see the BBC news web pages. He is very computer savvy. Now I thought that in the more or less free world you could display any url you liked, even my humble web pages. When I look at bbc.co.uk and click on news you go to news.bbc.co.uk...

THIS IS THE END OF GAS BOILERS

Good grief, please just delete the offending post, Mod. I trawled half-way through this stuff before I realised that it was yonks old.

    Strange Sort of Water Hammer

I doubt if it is the stoptap. Reducing the flow - with the stoptap - is alleviating the problem, the problem probably lies elsewhere. It sounds as if there is something that is attempting to shut off and is bouncing off the seating. why only one bump and what it is I haven't the faintest. Could...

Is it cheaper to leave Combi boiler on 24/7 or on timer

If you asked the nearest seven-year-old (before you get arrested) then they would probably say why don't you take a meter reading of your twice a day use, then take one of your all-day use, and take one from the other. I doubt if the seven-etc could spell initiative, though. I don't have a...

    New Boiler - £4,000!!!

Nobody has posted what would be a reasonable estimate for a boiler replacement in these conditions. I have no idea, but my sister had a replacement condensing combi fitted in a cupboard in her kitchen (no roof work!) last year for (I think) around £3200. (So I do have an idea after all!) So...

    Which Oil Boiler....?

Wouldn't it be more correct, oh what the hell. correct, to say that since Jan this year the maximum sulphur content in heating oil supplied in the EU is 1000 ppm? (Down from 2000.) The OP could call a few local suppliers. I would think that most quality suppliers have relatively low sulphur...

    Which Oil Boiler....?

Sedbuk thinks that the Danesmoors are 85% efficient, so the step up to condensing isn't that great. At least your boiler is in the middle of the room so that the heat it gives off isn't wasted. We have a Danesmoor 26/32 (can't remember the actual numbers) and we use around 2500 ltrs a year...

wrong cut out for ceiling downlights - help!

This metric stuff confuses me. Your ceilings are 2" thick? What are they made of, and how do the downlighters grip the hole? (Even if it were the correct size.) You need some flexible and heatproof material about 5mm thick (and 5 cm deep?) formed in a circle and glued into place (don't ask...

    Scale inhibitors

Ah, it comes to me now, subjective was the word I was looking for. The softener was disconnected some time before the Waterking was installed, whilst I refurbed the laundry room in my inimitably steady manner, so there was a period when we were running on nothing. From what I remember from...

    Scale inhibitors

Until about four years ago we had a salt water softener, and when you took a drink of the softened water, as I occasionally did, it was as sweet as you could want. Then we refurbed the laundry room and the old softener was too tall to fit anywhere, so it went. I was too mean to splash out for a...

How to test if single wire is live

For the first sentence, take the much-maligned neon test screwdriver, test it (and you) on a known live source, the back of a socket etc., and test the single wire. If the neon doesn't light test the screwdriver again on the known live source. You can then be reasonably sure that the wire is not...

    How to chop down conifers

8:30 this morning... and about half an hour ago... There were three rows of around 100+ ft of these awful things giving a hedge of about 15 feet in depth. At a guess there were 150 to 200 aliens. Two blokes, working hard, logs cut and kept, branches shredded and taken away, stumps...

    oil cosumption

We too have a Danesmoor 26/32, about 4 years old. It's rated by Sedbuk at 85% whish isn't bad. Although we have three beds the house is large and we have a numbing 14 rads. All except two in the baths have TRVs, most on 6-7 or so. (Two unused beds are off.) Roomstat is set to 18 and temp in the...

Planning for solar water heating a future date

Eventually, like boilers, and you and me, they wear out and have to be replaced. It's unlikely there is any financial return for any but the most modest system in under 30 years, by which time most solar stuff will be decidedly ragged. So free to run is like the NHS being free at the point of use.

    Removing ARTEX

A plasterer I discussed this with wouldn't touch skimming over, as if the Artex became soft from the moisture in the plaster the whole lot would start dropping off. I have cleared Artex off a 4 x 3 bedroom ceiling using a steamer and scraper. It took weeks and I will never be the same again...
