What do i do with the earth wire

Do you mean that the light fitting has an earth wire but the ceiling fitting doesn't or that the light fitting has no earth wire but the ceiling fitting has?

    Glass reinforced plastic roofs

I have a flat roof area covering a single garage, an entrance hall and a room approx 4 metres square. I had this recovered in EPDM (about 2mm thick rubber with a felty backing). It was glued to the OSB decking across the whole area and done by a local reputable company. This was about 10 years...

    Legal Requirement For Data Protection?

You could try giving a ficticious phone number and see if they say "OK, that checks out". Same when they ask for other personal info such as date of birth or mother's maiden name. Just make something up unless it's an organisation that has a genuine need for it.

Bosch Exxcel Washing Machine doesn't turn drum

It's certainly one of the symptoms of worn brushes on my machine (20+ year old Hotpoint 9524 800 DE LUXE - or something like that)

Raised beds - rendered breeze blocks?

I meant not so deep from front to back so once the soil is there it gives the impression that the whole wall is much thinner than it really is. So most of the wall might be 225mm thick but the top course only 100mm or whatever you decide. But the top course would be lined up at the front with...

Raised beds - rendered breeze blocks?

Not sure what you mean by "cutting breeze blocks in half lengthways" :? You could build the wall from normal or hollow concrete blocks and then render them. If you want them to look thin from the top just build a normal thickness retaining wall and then just do a thin top course lined up with...

    Water butt position

The rainwater diverters need to be at the same level as the final level in the water butt. So if you diverted above the patio doors you would need a very tall water butt or one with a sealed lid and an open-vented vertical pipe above it into which the diverter hose fitted. However...

    Removing a couple of bricks

Thanks chaps. I'll see what the quoting plumbers say. Several drilled holes would probably be easier. But if I was to remove two bricks I should first remove the three directly above them and insert a lintel (or two if I'm only removing one brick).

    Removing a couple of bricks

I'm about to get quotes for replacing a floor-standing CH boiler in the kitchen with a wall mounted one in the garage. (Sounds like a plumbing question coming up - but it's not!) Currently the 4 water pipes (two 22mm and two 28mm) from the boiler go up the surface of the kitchen wall into the...

Cosmetic advice for ugly pipework - chase / bury / box in

How about similar to option B but take the left hand pipe horizontally straight from the radiator to the corner, and the right hand pipe dropping vertically and immediately through 90 degrees to run just below the left hand pipe... ... and then maybe put a cupboard in front of it!

Fixing small hole in conservatory polycarb roof panel

Suggestions: - Clear, waterproof, external adhesive tape - Clear silicone - drill so it's properly round and fit a small grommet plug - if hole is small enough you could try using a soldering iron and melting the surrounding plastic across the hole. I suppose it depends on the finish you...

    Building a garden pergola

If you look at posts on pegolas in public parks or outside buildings they often appear to be bolted into a metal bracket which stands proud of ground level by a couple of inches on a thinner round post which is concreted into the ground. Mind you, I've had a fence fall down where the wooden...

    Housing one's velocipede

Have you considered corrugated fibreboard for the roof? In can look nice in the dark green colour and can be mixed with a bit of transparent if you want to let some light through.

Adding washing machine waste to existing waste pipe

I never used a trap and the fitting was on the soil pipe side of the sink trap. I never had an issue with smells. I suppose you could make a U shape in the washing machine drain hose in case any air gets through the non-return valve.

Adding washing machine waste to existing waste pipe

I successfully used one of these (or similar to) for many years... http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/Washing%20Machine%20Parts/Universal%20Parts/Plumbing%20%252526%20Installation/64TA37%20Self%20Cutting%20Waste%20Outlet%20Kit.html Mine had a non-return valve as part of it.
