    Replace or Paint FD30 doors

Doing refurbishments to a flat and there are some old fire doors which are those brown horrible ones. I am wondering whether a lick of paint would be any good - and if so the appropriate way and method to get the best finish. If not, I could replace these with some four panel smooth moulded...

    CCC Ring or Radial

If I calculate the CCC for a 2.5mm cable to be X amps using a particular installation method, is it true that if I use that cable with that method as a ring, then the CCC of that cable in the ring is 2X amps? (as assuming even load the current is split down each side of the ring). e.g. if the...

Length of Cable in Lighting Circuit?

Ok Step Back - I wanted to do a quick check on a circuit to check that the resistance ties up with the length. So I wanted to estimate the length, and then do the R1 and R2 dead test, looking up the resistance per metre run in the tables to see whether the resistance reading I had taken is less...

Length of Cable in Lighting Circuit?

Surely using the R1 + R2 value to imply the length might mean that you get a longer length if you've got a dodgy connection. I thought it might be the other way round, even in an existing circuit. i.e. estimate the length, then calculate the R1 + R2 to check it is within the tabulated limits...

Length of Cable in Lighting Circuit?

How do you estimate the length of cable in a circuit, in particular a lighting circuit (i.e. with the switched live)?

csa of phase and protective conductor

Is there a table showing the csa of the phase and protective conductor for 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10?

Sanity Check - RCD Trips with Safe Isolation

OK - I thought safe isolation simply meant opening the MCB for the circuit involved (after live/dead check, checking equipment etc). Since a neutral-earth fault on the dead circuit could still see current flowing from other circuits at the CU, what does this mean in a practicle sense from a...

Sanity Check - RCD Trips with Safe Isolation

OK - when isolating the MCB, I will only get small currents in the way you describe - when I think I am isolating a SP switch, it could be a lot worse, because, apart from the diffrence in potential of earth and neutral, which is still there for all circuits, I also have parallel paths of much...

Sanity Check - RCD Trips with Safe Isolation

Brilliant - Thanks - So, the single pole FCU meant that all the other neutrals on the ring where the FCU resides was effectively connected, and ultimately, had a path to earth when I made the cut, as the neutral wasn't isolated at the FCU - with a double pole FCU, this would have been safe...

Sanity Check - RCD Trips with Safe Isolation

Ok. 1. So it was perfectly safe doing what I did? 2. So, I guess I should be cutting the wires before I make the connection at the JB. 3. I thought the RCD measured the difference in current flowing through Line and back through Neutral - and tripped when there was a difference. Could...

Sanity Check - RCD Trips with Safe Isolation

Ring feeds 5A FCU FCU -> Junction Box -> Switch / Feed to Transformer Transformer feeds 4 downlights Need to replace Transformer to have four lights off 240V Put in new 1mm T&E from JB to feed four lights Just got the cable to the last light and cut it and the RCD trips Before...

    shower is leaking!

The seal should feed through all of the concertinas in one go without cutting otherwise it wont make a proper seal. It looks like that end piece might be screwed in at the bottom? If the seal you linked to is the right one, you should see a circular hole which to thread the seal into your...

    shower is leaking!

Yes that looks like the one - if you take a look at the very end of the panel, there should be two little plastic bits that you can remove before inserting the seal - the plastic bits may have fallen out, they often do, but you should see the profile similar to the ebay listing to see how it...

    Knackered bathroom walls

If it's already flat, you could put aquaboard up - if you are doing the whole bathroom, that may well be best. Depends what you want to do with the pipework, electrics for the shower, etc. and your budget. You could, for example, put CLS up and board onto that and use the gap for your pipework.

    shower is leaking!

Do you have a shower screen seal in place already? If not search "shower screen seal" on ebay or google. Get the right size.

    Knackered bathroom walls

Yes - if a big hole us a bonding, then multi-finish plaster. The flatter the finish of the plastering, the better the finish once you've tiles.

    removing floorboards

Could get yourself a floorboard lifter. http://www.buybrandtools.com/acatalog/Ansell_Floor_Board_Lifter.html Are the boards screwed or nailed? Are they tongue and groove or flush? If they are old boards, they might not be T&G, but if they are T&G you'll have to break the tongue using...

Loft conversion not classed as a bedroom, not sure why

Presumably it has been converted without the necessary building regs (and planning permission if required). e.g. Are the floor joists adaquate for a habitable room and who did the electrics? I wqould ask the estate agent when the room was converted. If the existing owner did the work...
