New light fitting - double insulated

Cheers folks, The fitting should be able to contain the choc blocks no problem. If not, I think I've seen a choc box in the SF catalogue, would that be an adequate enclosure? Can that just be pushed up into the void above the ceiling will be OK won't it? I think I've got some 15a terminal...

New light fitting - double insulated

Right, I think I've got it in my mind. Switched live to the L connection on its own. ALL neutral conductors to the N connection. Earth conductors to a choc block. IF IT'S NOT THE LAST LIGHT ON THE CIRCUIT All other live conductors (except the switched live) into a choc block...

New light fitting - double insulated

Evenin' all, I've bought a new light for my kitchen. It's a low voltage spotlight track thing from Ikea and is double insulated so there's no earth connection in the base, only single live and neutral connections. So how do I go about wiring this? The kitchen light is the last on the...

    Traffic / rain

I know what you mean Crafty. The country sort of comes to a standstill at the slightest hint of adverse weather and I'm convinced it's because people don't adjust their driving style to suit the weather so accidents happen and roads become obstructed. Obviously there are occasions when the...

    plastering ceilings

Have you left the skim up or did you remove it before it went off? Please tell me you removed it! If you've removed it, get a plasterer in to blend the patch in. If you haven't you'll probably need to get the whole ceiling skimmed to hide it unless you can remove the bedged work without...

    Any financial advisors

Johnboy, Couple of things. Firstly, if you've got a to year discounted deal, you're probably gonna have a fairly hefty penalty to pay if you pay off more than the agreed amount before the two year deal is up. Ocasionally there's is no tie in period but that's very rare on a fixed discounted...

    External render patch

Afternoon all, I've been asked to price up a small job, patching some damaged render on the outside of my local cafe. I've done interior work for them before which they've been very pleased with (and from which I've had other work) and this is more of a favour I'll be doing for them one...

    Damaged plasterboard edges

Fair enough. It's true that everyone's tastes are different and for me, coving ain't for decoration, it's to hide a bent house. I'll admit that I'm not the best plasterer in the world (I have only been doing it full time for a few months afterall) but my corners and angles are spot on. However...

    NEW SOCKET FROM CONSUMER UNIT?

Firstly, are you absolutely certain that you're having problems because the load is too large? I'd say you'd probably need to have the washer and dryer, kettle, toaster, microwave and other appliances on all at the same time to overload your circuit. If your current circuit is a ring main...

    Rendering cost per Sqm

Hi Dazzer, Like you, I have no idea on price for external rendering. Is that £30 per sq m inclusive of materials? Obviously material costs will be significantly higher than a couple of bags of finishing plaster. To be honest, I'd say the best way to price it is to determine how long it...

    Damaged plasterboard edges

What's wrong with coving? I've gotta stick coving up throughout my whole house because the whole house is wonky and I need to hide the wavy joins between ceiing and wall. I've tried to make them look better when replastering but it's just no use - coving it is. Regards Fred

    Damaged plasterboard edges

Graff, If it's the sort of damage I am thiking it is from your description then your plasterer should just be able to skim over it. Depending on the severity of the damage it may still be visible as an "unstraight" section of the wall but if you can live with that then I wouldn't worry about...

Change Drive Belt on Holden Astra 1.8 TS 1998 (Australian)

The tensioner wheel is the most likely one you need to rely on as others hve said but you could also check the alternator to see if it's mounted on a sliding mount. Unlike the Commodore / Omega, the Holden Astra is identical to the Vauxhall Astra other than the name. Regards Fred

    Finding more power

It ain't worth remapping a naturally aspirated engine - you'll see naff all gain. Remapping is only really beneficial on engines fitted ith turbochargers. What, like 1p a litre more? That's 60p a tank for your average car so paying more at the pump makes little difference. What does make a...

    Fridges Freezers & RCDs

Ray, Not really related to the CU change but have you thought of getting a UPS for your IT kit? Your employer may even foot the bill. That way, if the power does go down, your IT kit remains powered for however long your chosen UPS is capable of powering it for. regards Fred

    Do skimmed ceilings leave bubbles?

Nick, Well I thought Sandtex was an exterior masonry paint? Is that what it is? Is it like a paint filled with aggregate? So basically it's not a smooth surface, just not patterned like artex is? If so, he's talking out of his poo chute! He just doesn't want to have to put in the effort...

    Rip-off partscenter

Softus, If it had been a paid job then yes. As it happens though it was a fitting for my own house and I was in no hurry and nowhere in particular I had to be. In addition, any time I need a bit that I don't have in my box of bits, I buy a few so I've always got spares in the future...

    chimney breast

Dave, Thinking about it, how big is the patch of damage? It may be possible to fix a piece of expanded metal mesh over the damage and plaster that in. Regards Fred
