    sizing newly plastered walls

Hi Duncan, I think your talking about the mist coat. Sizing is what you do before papering (with a weak mix of paste) but the principle is the same. Different paints, and indeed different surfaces, require a different mix. Some cheap paints are so thin that you may only need to add a bit...

Crystalline deposit on plastered intenal wall

Hi Noseall, Aren't the salts hygroscopic though which means they attract water so the whole lot needs to be taken back to brick and re-done with 3/1 s/c with RendaProof added? Or is that just hype made up by damp proof companies to make more money? Regards Fred

Can you dry plaster out too quickly

No problem. Like I say, I could cause cracking but you could get away ith it. Personally I wouldn't risk it. LOL, these diy programmes make me laugh. The likes of changing room and stuff I mean, how can you say, "we've got three days to do this" when it's a seven day job?! I always wonder...

Can you dry plaster out too quickly

Hi Duckegg, If it dries too quickly then there's every chance it will crack. Don't use an industrial heater! Your room will be like an oven. All you can really do is ventilate the room well to allow the moisture to escape. Regards Fred

    Leaking Worcester 240

Nice one folks. Bang on the money - perished washers on the connection at the back of thhe heat exchanger. Mate had to remove the heat exchanger and fan and replaced fibre washers that had disintegrated. Couple of hours work for him, £65 fee (no fix no fee) plus parts. He didn't charge me for...

I came second in a strawberry crushing contest the other day. A woman with no legs won. Jammy c***.

    Advert - your opinion

As someone else pointed out, there's no info in there. I forgot about my e-mail being in my profile but even so Softus, it really ouldn't be worth my while trying to put a sneaky ad on here. For a start, the target audience is so limited that responses would be thin on the ground if they even...

    Advert - your opinion

Cheers all, Al areas covered is out now. I hadn't looked upon it as though it cold be interpreted any other way but re-reading it makes me realise it doesn't sound good. Also, the local rag only goes out to households within a 10 - 15 mile raius of here so i stands to reason that I don't need...

    Curved reveals

Did I say time served? Err no. I've been plastering for four years now, although only been going it alone full time for a few months. Previously it was weekend work and property developments. I'm still learning. I will always be learning. I've done curved reveals before but wasn't personally...

    Advert - your opinion

Evenin' all, I'm sticking a new ad in my local trade directory. I had a quarter page last month and got a few reponses and have decied to go for a half page this month. I want to make it attractive and informative but am worried it's too cluttered. Wht do you think of the following content...

    Board Finish

Cheers Makitaman and Noseall, I know I'll end up with a full diary in the not too distant future and your encouragement gratefully received. I would prefer all private work but figure that subbing out is also a good way to mak sure I'm getting work. The problem is that it'll pay less but also...

    wall preperation

As a general rule of thumb, PVA is the stuff to use, However, there are some surfaces that are too smooth and not porous enough to provide a key for the finishing coat so the skim just slides about everywhere and makes a horrible mess. In addition, it doesn't bond too well when dry and is quite...

    wall preperation

Ahh, Wickes Plaster Bonding Agent. Made by Knauf. Same as Thistle Bond It. Contains silicone aggregate and sets like rock providing an excellent key on shiny surfaces. Regards Fred

    Board Finish

Blimey! Nice one. Well, nice one that you've got loads of work, not that your losing work. Shame you're not closer - I could've come and given you a hand. Still only getting three days work a week at the mo. Still, better than nothing and it will get better. How did you get work from...

    Board Finish

Hey Brist, I usually use Multi too although I have used board finish before. It seemed to go off quicker. Also, thinking back on it, the last ceiling I did with board finish was absolutely perfect. No trowel marks, no little blemishes, nothing. Having said that, it was only 2.4m x 3.6m so...

    ceiling rose wiring

Where does the power show up? You'll have two sources of power, the live conductors (all red or brown or combination of and there will be two or three depending on whether or not it's the last fitting in the loop). They should be live permanently. Then you've got a black insulated conductor...

Is this a bad plastering job? (pics)..

Don't get me wrong Fisco - I'm not having a go at you for paying that price - you pay what you gotta pay at the end of the day. I'm jut amazed that people have the cheek to charge such prices. Even when I get to the stage where I can afford to lose jobs I don't think I'll ever over price work -...

    Curved reveals

Cheers Noseall, They're just such a pain in the backside. Still, the more I practice the better I'll get and if I get this job (which it looks like I will do), I'll have seven windows with curved reveals to tackle. Thanks again. Fred.

Is this a bad plastering job? (pics)..

JESUS!!! I'm guessing standard ceiling height of 2.4m or is it an older property? If only 2.4m high then that's only six bags of multi finish and seven or eight boards for the ceiling. Oh and a litre of PVA and few strips of scrim. That's £60 - £65 materials, the rest labour! I've just...
