    I remember being on 210v in the 50s. The electricity board gave use new light 'bulbs' when they changed to 240v.

    Not quite. The 'Wiring Diagram' was a block diagram and just showed a wire going into the variac and one going from the variac to the lights. And that was how it was wired. :shock: No neutral to the variac; it was just a variable inductor in series with the live to the lights.

    Saying that is a bit like saying Ford is American so Ford cars are LHD. :) Anyway the term Variac can mean any variable auto transformer. From Wikipedia The transformer in question was rated for 240v.

    In the 70s I was employed as the engineer at an advertising agency's television studio. One of my first jobs was in the preview theatre. The house lights were dimmed by a big Variac. The problem was that the Variac's brushes kept on burning out. What was the fault?

    wiring for micro switch

    Check with a multimeter if the reed switch is turned on at the same position of the knob as the microswitch is actuated . If so connect the wires to the C (common) and NO (Normally Open) terminals of the microswitch.
