    Lorry speeds?

Oilman, The term HGV "Heavy Goods Vehicle" was replaced a number of years ago by the term LGV or "Large Goods Vehicle" along with different types of categories as opposed to the old class 1, 2 & 3 system. "Large" doesn't sound as impressive as "Heavy" IMO. :)

    Lorry speeds?

Heard on the news yesterday that on a certain section of the M42, LGV's will be banned from overtaking. This part of the road is an uphill section so when an LGV decides to overtake another LGV who is only slightly slower, it takes minutes for the faster vehicle to overtake safely. Apparently...

hot water on then violent vibrating noise

Gents, both of you are correct. :) It depends on the criteria you select use when carrying out your search. The default option for Search Query is set at "Search for any terms or use query as entered". Using this option gives 6570 matches. Using the "Search for all terms" option...

    space saver spare wheels

When I was a student, I used to buy wheels off wrecked cars from the local scrapyard. I would then take them to a tyre fitter who would swap the tyres over onto my car. I would give the tyres a good visual inspection for any signs of obvious damage and trust to luck for anything else. I...

Floorboards (Fitting Metric and Imperial together)

Thanks for the speedy response big-all. I didn't know floorboards were available in imperial. As you say, 'we are all still learning' I don't want to ignore your advice but as usual the time to complete the task is limited (like today!). All the boards are cut to length and ready to be...

Floorboards (Fitting Metric and Imperial together)

I am repairing the floorboards on the landing and have had to replace a section that is 3 boards width. I have purchased the nearest metric equivalent but of course there is a shortfall in height and width. I have some dpc and /or sandpaper to gain the correct height but the gap across the...

    Protecting Plastic Pipe

In order to gain extra bedroom space, we have converted the separate bathroom and toilet into a bedroom and vice versa, (considered loft extension but not value for money due to roof design). Part of the plumbing works has lead to new plastic piping being laid over the existing copper c/h pipe...

Do you love your job ?

At the moment I hate my job. It's not the company or the actual business that I am in, its the people who have been recently put in place to manage the business. Its amazing how one or two personalities in key positions can effect the whole balance of an organisation and basically ruin it for...

Good job our economy is doing so well....

I filled up my Mondeo yesterday. I was on empty so 50 litres cost me approx £45. That will last about 10 days for the journey to work excluding private mileage. When I was on holiday in the States last year $20 filled the tank of a comparable size family salon. This is not a political...

    Exterior Paintwork

I am working on the exterior paintwork of the house (1930') which hasn't been touched in years (my own fault really). I had a feeling the woodwork was rotting but couldn't assess the extent until a I got a closer look. I have removed a rotten piece of 2" x 1" across the full length of the...

A little bit late but thanks for the advice from the last 4 posters. Room is now completed apart from the radiator and door which I can do in the garage (in my spare time!!!). Onto the next task which is the repainting the fascia's and re-aligning the guttering.

    Emulsion as undercoat

I have used the search facility and can't find that this question has been asked before. Now that I have completed the walls and ceiling (thks Thermo and Panjandrum), I have the woodwork to complete. I have primered the new skirting boards with oil based primer but I am on a really tight...

    Painting Plastered Ceiling/Walls

Had the windows open all day but the door was shut for a lot of the time so I guess the fumes built up as more of the room got painted. I will try the tip about the water tomorrow. Only dropped the loaded brush once but luckily the old curtains I had put down saved the day for the carpet

    Painting Plastered Ceiling/Walls

Used the 2" brush as advised and with a bit more practice I should be getting some fairly good results. Not surprisingly my best efforts will be hidden from view when the wardrobes go back. Funny how it seems to work out like that. Managed to complete the first coat for the whole room. Not...

    Painting Plastered Ceiling/Walls

Thanks for the detailed response Thermo, I follow what you've said. I started off with a 1 1/2" brush and gradually worked my down to 1/2" thinking it would make life easier :? Time to get back up the ladder I guess :D

    Painting Plastered Ceiling/Walls

I have had a look through all the previous posts and couldn't find question had been asked before so here goes. I have just had the back bedroom walls and ceiling reskimed with the intention of emulsioning the whole room. Are there any techniques for acheiving a really sharp division...
