    Is this a NO-NO? - 13a socket on 40a RCBO cooker circuit?

Haha - funny, I was just expalinging that to the missus that its a common misconception that the fuse in the CU or plug protects the appliance/s but INDEED it protects the cable from meltdown. Considering my cooker radial is 6mm all the way, if I do the following, can I avoid changing the 40a...

    Is this a NO-NO? - 13a socket on 40a RCBO cooker circuit?

So if I do that, do I need to change the 40a RCBO down to a lower one? - considering the new 3.6kw oven is going to be hardwired and run off the same radial....is that too large a breaker? Im just concerned as have been given various advices about the size of the RCBO. I want it to be SAFE...

    Is this a NO-NO? - 13a socket on 40a RCBO cooker circuit?

Sorry for the confusion. Thats how its set up at the moment. If you read my last post, it explains the new proposed setup (caused by a replacement oven that needs hardwiring - couldnt change what they were gonna give me) I guess, with the new setup, the unswitched double will only have my gas...

    Is this a NO-NO? - 13a socket on 40a RCBO cooker circuit?

Well, I kinda insisted that the cooker circuit was future-proofed. I did alot of the work myself in terms of chasing the walls, dropping the cables, fitting the gang boxes and sockets....I even wired them all up prior to connection at the CU. The electricians were very good in supervising my...

    Is this a NO-NO? - 13a socket on 40a RCBO cooker circuit?

Guys. Could do with someone confirming the above for me. I had a new CU put in just over 12mths ago and the firm that did it also did some work in the kitchen for us. (sockets etc.) Now, its only just come to light that they "may" have done a boob and I just want someone to quote me with...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Thats great - I will probably chase out behind the oven and do it as it should be done. Dont like the thought of the outlet inside a cupboard. The 6mm cable behind the oven is surface mounted/clipped so I will do my best to ensure a flush blanking plate etc. Thank you again so much for...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

On a side note to installation as already outlined, the electrician that came out today told me that I could (or he could) install the dual cooker connection plate within the adjacent cupboard to limit the amount of work (eg. chasing out for a box in the wall behind the oven to ensure the plate...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Haha, yeah....most likely the most extravagant thing will be oven chips  Oh, and btw, I take it 6mm is ok to wire the socket for the hob? - I know you said save a bit and use 2.5mm but 6mm is fine I presume as I have a few metres left over in the garage!

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Thanks for the stellar info....much appreciated indeed. I have had a spark round just now - explained the scenario and he was in agreement with what you and I have suggested regards to wiring. As I am a fairly competent guy, (when we had the kitchen and new CU last year, the firm of...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Cheers fella, I think I will do the legwork (wiring backwards, installing the socket and cooker connection plate whilst the circuit is off as I wont need it for a while) and get a qualified electrician to come in, change the RCBO and test the circuit for safety purposes. Then, when...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Top Banana! Ive got some 6mm lying around though so I guess that may as well get used eh? Another question for ya. Obvioulsy I need to change the RCBO down to 20a from 40a. Is it notifiable to change these yourself? - how easy are they to change? I see that they have a...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Well, its all 6mm cable..... 6mm supply to the 45a DP cooker switch (from the CU) which is installed at worktop level next to the hob. Then its 6mm load cable to the double unswitched socket in the adjacent cupboard right next to the oven and hob (oven is built in directly under the hob)...

This is the oven http://www.johnlewis.com/230718887/Product.aspx?s_kenid=09986ede-2396-8348-a30d-0000459c3f98&s_kwcid=paidsearch but its coming direct from Hotpoint themselves as a replacement. The John Lewis site says 32a circuit...another different instruction lol. I had thought about just...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

I havent got it YET so I would have checked the book for more details BUT the oven is a Hotpoint with model no. of OS897DPIX - its a single oven with a large space that can be used as a double oven with a divider - also has the pyrolitic feature so i want to be doubly sure wiring is up to...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Hahaha Well, my old 2.8kw oven says 16a in the book but came with a 13a fused plug on the end of it! I would prefer to err on the side of caution as its a £1000 oven and I imagine the draw on it can be quite high due to a pyrolitic cleaning cycle. Say, for some reason, I had the oven on...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Thanks. So, basically: 1. Take exisiting 6mm feed from the double socket I have in the cupboard 2. Wire this to the supply side of the dual CC plate. 3. Wire the socket in cupboard in 6mm from one of the loads of the dual CC plate. 4. Change RCBO down to 20a/30ma and test. 5...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

No problem. will get my sparky to change the RCBO as I dont think its something I can do myself (they seem to be wired into the CU and not simply "unpluggable" to swap them like my old CU was. Regarding the oven hardwiring, is it ok to just wire the supplied oven flex into the dual connection...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Excellent news - thanks. So, the cable for the 13a socket - 6mm or 2.5mm? Hardwiring the oven - replace the flex with 6mm wired directly to the plate? Change RCBO to 20a/30ma such as this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crabtree-Starbreaker-RCBO-61-B12030/dp/B004P4VVWI - looks like the ones on...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

I just phoned Hotpoint, she just said my spark would tell me what size breaker! - she just reiterated the rating of the oven at 3600w/3.6kw!!! Man, if your saying I shouldnt have a socket on a 40a circuit, my electrician wired it in this way when they did the CU so I thought they new what...

Advice on ensuring wiring is ok for new oven & hob...ple

Thanks for the replies firstly. I have just double checked my consumer unit and the breaker for the oven ciruit has markings on it "B40 / 30ma" so I assume it is a 40a breaker/RCBO (its a Crabtree StarBreaker unit) I assumed that this would be OK for my exisitng oven as they Eletrical firm...
