Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Jason, Problem one - yes, the combed out, twisted braid at the plug end is going to have its own earth sleeve with heatshrink covering the point where the braid is twisted. As for the rest of the problems, the DIY cables are only gonna sit at the back of my hifi etc so flexation is not...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Exactly what i thought plugwash! Its hardly like im gonna earth the braid at the plug end and then leave the braid all frayed at the other ! - I do have some sense! The idea (as i understand it) is to create an earth loop using the braid...good so ive heard for audiophile...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Thats all well and good Jason, however "it aint gettin the baby bathed"! Ive been told by Lapp (manufacturer) that the CY cable i would possibly uses is ok to be terminated in a plug. As i said before....why provide a copper braid if it is not going to be connected to anything - sheer...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Ahhhhhh - i forgot about screw alignment.....i suppose i should also take into account torque settings on the screws also? - ive heard that over tightening can squash the cores too much leading to "flat" audio? Im seriously thinking about upgrading my pin screws too - im sure i could ly my...

Possibly so Ban, but at least i'll enjoy wasting it as i will have enjoyed making the snake oil components (must remember to use some of that blu tak stuff too that you recommended in a previous thread.

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Thanks Zambezi, Am certainly not gonna be selling any home brewed stuff as i dont fancy a stretch behind bars  My main intention here was solely to make sure that the method of wiring the "snake oil" cables was safe (its only gonna sit behind the TV etc so its doubtful that one...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Thanks for confirming the braid earthing would be OK. I know that this is not the intended use for such a cable, and i also know that the benefits in terms of audiophilia are likely to be slim to none. But, as i said before, it is a hobby, i like making things myself. Am not one of...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Thanks for the comments. Ive seen those rewirable IEC C7 plugs (suitable for my sky/blu ray) and seen IEC C13 (i think thats right from memory) too for the TV/SUbwoofer. They probably arent designed to accept 2.5mm, like you have seen - but like Ban said, i very much doubt if there is one...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

Appreciate all your input folks. If i decide to go ahead using either 1.5 or 2.5, what i would like to know is if the termination of the braiding is safe.....im the first to admit im not an electrician hence being here to ask those that are. Assuming i connect the earth core at both ends...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

AFAIK???? whats that? :o Im sure the braiding that exists on SY cable IS there to stop damage to the cable but why use copper in CY cable braiding unless its gonna conduct something! - pointless waste of money from the manufacturers side eh? From the little i know (just via researching)...

Advice required on DIY mains IEC leads for home cinema kit

I appreciate the purpose of the shielding, but isnt that for SY cables? where the braid is galvanised steel for mechanical purposes..... The braid in the cable i am looking at is tinned copper...surely the cable manufacturer wouldnt use copper for mechanical purposes due to cost, therfore...
