    Heatsink paste

I've always cleaned the old heat sink paste, and replaced with new whenever I remove a heat sink on a PC, regardless of what it is. I view a 10 minute job that costs less than £5 time and money well spent if it means I haven't assumed that the join between heat sink and cooler has enough...

Security: Should I ditch Norton for Virgin Media

My 2 cents - Norton is bloatware, same as McAfee. vote for Kaspersky from me, very good at what it does, and doesn't eat system resources. If you don't like it, you can always uninstall and go back to another application.

    Renaming my hard drive ?

Found this that may be of use to you. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Hard-Drive-Problems-2113/Rename-hard-drive-Windows-1.htm Other option is to invest in some disk management software - useful if you also plan to partition. http://www.acronis.co.uk/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/

    failed psu

you get what you pay for with PSU's, and cheap is usually cheap for a reason. Check out www.scan.co.uk - they have plenty at decent prices. imo, it's a component worth spending more than £15 on, as if it goes titsup, it has the potential to take out an entire PC (and then some in worst case!)

    Bluray to PC wireless router

you could always pick up a cheap wireless router, and have it situated near your blu ray player. Then connect the blu-ray to the router via the ethernet (network) port on the back of the player. The next step is to then have the new wireless router talk to your main (current) router. Lots...

    Computer keeps turning itself off

Safe mode loads Windows with the minimal set of drivers that Windows needs to get started - ie it wont even try to start any applications that normally start, such as all those tools and bits that every program wants to run at start up. Whenever I've been faced with this problem, I've opened...

    hot water a trickle

scarily, I've posted the same problem this morning as well http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=202863 I'm hoping it is the washer, as that's going to be the least expensive problem!

Hot water problem with single tap

Thanks twgas; I should have added in my OP that it's a mixer tap, and the cold flow from it is fine, so I'm assuming that the blockage/seize is before the point of mixing. As a non-plumber, I can't fathom out why there sometimes is a flow (albeit poor), and sometimes none at all - I would...

Hot water problem with single tap

Hi all, hope that someone can advise or point me in the right direction. Recently (in the last week), we've noticed that the flow of hot water to a downstairs tap (in the kitchen) has been greatly reduced, and last night, it became non-existent. The hot water tap in the bathroom where the...

    Connecting a remote doorbell

ok, feel free to flame away, this is a question that I'm sure will cause some eye rolling - so get it out of the way not please:  we have a nice black metal doorbell surround and button on the front door. This was connected (by someone else, previous owner) to the button of a modern...

Advice on insulation under boarded loft

Hi all. The joists in our loft are 9" x 3", with 150mm fibreglass insulation running between, and 150mm same running over - it certainly keeps the cold out of the rooms below. We are planning to board the loft out soon, which will mean removing the layer of insulation running over the...

    Recommended firebricks

Hi all. I'm thinking of building a wood fired oven in the garden - I've got lots of old victorian bricks (left over from renovation) that I will use to face it, but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a type of brick to use inside the actual oven (ie oven floor, sides and arch). Have...

what are 1 and 2 way pull switches?

Feel free to facepalm before answering this :) Replacing a pull switch for shower/extractor in my bathroom. I've killed the power, taken it down, made the diagram, identified from my main fusebox that I need 6A replacement....now I need to know the difference between 1 way and 2 way, so that...
