vapour barrier necessary Timber Framed extension?

Hi All, Thanks for answers. I thought the wall build up would let me get away without an internal VPC because the wall is 'breathable' from the inside to the outside? The other reason to ask if it was necessary is that in the rush to get some heating in I have fixed some panelling behind...

Hi All, I feel a bit foolish asking for help on this but hey.... I'm adding 2-way switches to my new kitchen. The diagram is straightforward and the 3-cores and earth are coloured brown, black, grey and green. I'm supposed to mark the L1/2 terminals (grey/black) with brown sheathing to...

how to get a slope on a box gutter

I went throught the whole process of considering lead. It would have needed 2 drips giving three bays. Each bay would have needed some fall so total say 5". At one end of the valley we would have needed to go 500m up the rafters with lead and lose 2 rows of slates. Another suggestion was two...

how to get a slope on a box gutter

Hi all, Can anybody please help me with a box gutter construction problem? I have two roofs making a horizontal valley into which I am making a box gutter. The gutter is formed on an oak beam 5.2m long and the beam is "flat" (its actually 20mm higher at one end ie 1:255). I am trying to...

How to do 5m "horizontal" valley

woody - I've already been put off using big length lead thanks to comments on the problem. Harmetalking - Bituthene stuff looks the business. I was going to use a damp proof mebrane then GeoTile as a lead underlay. I had thought of other materials than lead but there is quite a lot of...

How to do 5m "horizontal" valley

Lots of ideas - thanks very much. I've now got a lot more confidence in this job :P Sensibly it would appear that 3 t-pren expansion joints would be the way to go. But I think it will look ugly and be a big expense. I can't have drips unless I expand up the rafters but I'll see how bad...

How to do 5m "horizontal" valley

Hi all and thanks for enlightening replies. Doitall got me thinking. I think there may may an exaggerated fear about the expansion of lead so I looked up the extent of the problem... It turns out that 1m of lead will expand/contract 0.028mm for every 1°C rise/fall in temp. If I lay my...

    Headlap working with reclaimed slates

Hi - thanks for replying. I attach image of roof. I wouldn't know how to apply soakers except at ridges. And they will be covered by lead flashing. I will get the bonding within 2mm - its absolutely painstaking work since some slates are pretty irregular and over wide. I really got done...

    Headlap working with reclaimed slates

hi datarebal, Sorry forgot to reply to your comment about headlap being less than 125mm. If the slates were 450mm then you are right - the headlap would be 120mm. However the slates are 18" x 9" which is 457.2 x 228.6 so the headlap is a bit better at 125mm.

    Headlap working with reclaimed slates

hi datarebal and thanks for reply. Roof is 62 sq metres (1800 ish slates?) so soakers could be tricky! The slates are excellent but the old holes are on average about 10mm. On the drawings the blue dots are the old holes and the green dots are the reholing. They are 25mm apart. Its a...

    Headlap working with reclaimed slates

Hi all - please can anyone help me with slating low pitch roof with reclaimed slates? I want to slate a 21 degree roof with a 450x225 (18"x9") slate. I've increased the headlap to 125mm (5") from about 80mm - but I'm sort of worried that this may not be enough. I'm reholing the slates...

Can a boxed sash window have weights on one side?

Thanks Steve, Its interesting to know that somebody has actually tackled the problem but on the advice of the joiner I'm going for a tried and tested approach! The window manufacturer has agreed to make a single window with a double central box. The centre width is about 170mm which...
