    Upgrading existing system

Hi, I live in a house that was built in the mid/late 80s that is heated by means of an oil fuelled boiler with standard central heating radiators controlled by Honewell valves in each room. The valves look a bit like this...

    Installing upvc windows yourself

Hi, I have a house that needs all of its windows replacing, so I got quotes from Everest and a couple of other window replacement companies. The Everest quote was hair-raising and the other local replacement companies were no bargain either. Someone suggested to me that I could measure...

    Video remote not working

Hi, I'm having a problem with my VCR/DVD Recorder Model Number NV-VP31EB/EBL: In the menu screen 'others' I accidentally set my remote control to VCR2 and now I cannot access the menu screen to change it back to VCR1. Can anyone help me? TIA Jever

    Air Source Heat Pumps

Hi, I recently visited a new development site (I like to nose around for new ideas) and learned that some new houses are now being heated by 'air source heat pumps'. It's a bit like an air conditioning unit that stands in your back garden and extracts heat from the atmosphere (apparently...

    Terrestrial digital ariel

Hi, I've just moved into a house that has a 'traditional' type ariel (one of these ugly things: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SLX-48-ELEMENT-KIT-UHF-DIGITAL-TV-AERIAL-WIDEBAND-WITH-FULL-INSTALL-KIT-/281229580246 ) that has detached from its mounting and is now laying on the roof tiles hanging...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

Hi, I don't think there's a problem with the pump, it whirs quietly when I switch the heating on. The boiler is an oil fired Myson Velaire, approaching 30 years of service. There is a red reset button (see picture), although pressing it doesn't produce any results. However...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

I can't quite believe this. I was staring at the airing cupboard thinking where to cut first, when I thought I'd close the stopcock on the FE feed before draining down and opening up the pipes. The surprise was that the stopcock was already closed and I have no recollection of closing it...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

Hi, I've been up in the loft and traced the out feed from the FE tank down to the airing cupboard. Assuming I was successful in attaching the photo, it's the 15mm pipe between the 2 22mm pipes with the red stopcock that then goes on down to the pump (with the strange feed from the right -...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

Unfortunately, there is no end of crud in the f/e tank and it didn't occur to me to clean it out before starting work. I haven't got a magnet (but will try to get one) and I'm not sure if I can find where the cold feed tees into the flow pipe from the boiler, (probably behind kitchen units)...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

Hi, The electric motor was quite warm, so I unscrewed it from the brass valve casing and turned the spindle by hand, switched both the heating and hot water on, but still no movement. Can it be right that the valve takes less than 1/8 of a turn for all three options, or is there a problem...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

Hi, I've finally found time to replace the three port valve. Having drained down the system and carefully plumbed and wired in the valve, I now need to refill the system. I've untied the ball cock in the f/e tank, which is now about half full. The downstairs radiators are full, but the...

    Three tanks in the loft

Hi, I have a real 'beginner level' question, for which I apologise, but I have to ask as I'm itching to know. I'm thinking about renewing my insulation and I've just been up into my loft. Whilst I was up there, I noticed three water tanks next to eachother. Two were fairly large (25...

    Replacing a 3 port valve

Hi, Yes, you're right, the copper pipe on the left is 28mm, whilst the copper pipe on the right is 22mm. I've added a picture of the bend on the 28mm pipe from a straight-on angle, just in case the top view is a bit misleading. I've also added a picture from the top that includes the pipe...
