I can't seem to get some rsj's to be level side ways, length ways they are fine, but side ways is a bit off.Is this normal? Padstones/lintels are level both ways.
I can't see it being an issue but thought I'd check. They are for a timber floor.
I don't think lime mortar rots away- stone walls are normally made of two leaves with rubble fill in the middle which doesn't always have lots of mortar mixed in.
Stone walls made with lime mortar when properly built will last for centuries.
Thanks for the reply
Thanks, just thought it might with it being a solid concrete wall(everything I read seems to say solid walls are always prone to damp)
I am building a wall to fill an opening in a 600mm stone wall. The opening is about 2000mm wide and the new wall needs to go to the wall plate height of 3500mm.
I have been laying 4 inch blocks flat and joining the two leaves with a block across every block length.
What I was thinking of doing...
the rsj is in place and level, the Padstone it's sitting on is level, but I can get a trowel in between it and the rsj quite a bit in some places, is this normal or should I put a very thin layer of mortar under the rsj?
Thanks for the replies, I had a feeling it would trap moisture in the dpm.
I'll go and stick it in the hole in the wall then, the hole that's 6m high :$
I'm about to install a ridge beam with one side into a 600mm stone wall and the other into a block wall. I was wondering if it's worth protecting the end of the rsj thats going into the stone wall? A friend has advised to cover the end of the rsj in dpm- or bitumen before installing it.
Any...
