    Book on plumbing

Can anyone recommend a good book on plumbing and central heating. I have a few basic DIY books, but would like something that goes into more detail – explains all different types of valves e.g. Difference between type A and B drain cock. Service valve vs. isolating valve. Full bore, ball...

    Diagram of Primatic cylinder

Thanks MANDATE, Based on your description I've put together how I think it looks like: I can also see if the air somehow goes, how the water can mix so additives are not great. What I want to do though is try to clean the system to stop the boiler kettling and was planning to use...

    Valliant combi - no HW

Sounds like the flow switch, but see this as well: http://cgi.www.a1-gas.co.uk/cgi-bin/www.a1-gas.co.uk/bbmat.cgi?getsubject=1769&script=question&frames=N

Combi boiler AND header tank in loft??

I'll chance my arm here: The tank in the loft feeds water into the primary circuit. The water in the primary circuit flows around your radiators and through the boiler when the pump is on - when you drained a radiator, water from the tank replaced what was lost and the ball valve opened to...

    What is this

Still trying to decide if I am dealing with a Primatic system or not. What do you make of this: Is it: a) a normal cylinder, but heating is fed from same tanks as cylinder and is not vented (presume it expands back up feed pipe into cold tank). b) Primatic cylinder but with the...

    Diagram of Primatic cylinder

Does anyone have a really detailed diagram of how the inside of a Primatic cylinder works. I've looked all over the web and seen a few schematics, but they don't really detail all the connections to see exactly how the air bubble seal works. Reason for asking is I am about to drain down a system...

Advice on keeping an old boiler going…

Thanks oilman. Does that mean it's OK to use the Fernox even though they have a Primatic cylinder as long as no-one decides to drink the hot water later ? Also, am I right in thinking the rad in the room that has the thermostat shouldn't have a TRV ?

Advice on keeping an old boiler going…

I’m trying to help sort out the heating at my parents’ house and would greatly appreciate some advice. What they really need is a new boiler, but that will have to wait until after winter. Problems are as follows: Boiler is kettling Some radiators not getting properly hot Some rooms remain...

    mirror screws

thanks everyone. I should complain to B&Q - what's the point of selling mirror screws that are not "fit for purpose"; don't imagine I'll get very far though !

    mirror screws

the caps are dome headed and screw into the end of the screw.

    mirror screws

We have a plain mirror that we want to hang using mirror screws. It has holes drilled in the corners and we've bought some mirror screws from B&Q, but I'm not sure if that's all I need. I thought there should be some sort of rubber grommet or cushioning around the screw so that it doesn't...

    Backup generators

one last question on this post- why do generators refer to kVA rather than kW output ?

    Backup generators

thanks again all. the third one looks interesting especially as it says "will post to united kingdom". Wonder what the Royal Mail would make of that one. Anyway, I'm obviously not going to try to rig any of this up myself, but I might mention to the proper spark I get to come to check over my...

    Backup generators

thanks for replies. I know I can manage with a camping gas stove, etc. and generator direct to TV; it's really the heating that's a problem as that's wired directly to a switched outlet. Was just wondering if there was an easy way to power up a few selected appliances, without having to run...

    Backup generators

Where we live we get a lot of power cuts (every 2-3 weeks). Mostly fairly short-lived (minutes), just enough to bugger up the PC and reset all the clocks. However, on occassion they have lasted nearly 24 hours. It's not like we live in the sticks either, just 5 miles from Manchester Airport, but...

Lights not fully off when off ??

The people who did the rewire were electricians working for a large electrical contractor company. They did it "unofficially" on a Saturday for cash, however I was under the impression it was a proper job as they were recommended by someone and are obviously professionally qualified. The rewire...

Lights not fully off when off ??

We recently had the upstairs rewired and I am now fitting new lights. I had a bit of a shock (not literally thankfully) last night though and am puzzled as to what could be going on. I'd turned the upstairs lights off at the CU and undid the ceiling rose. I checked the voltage between each of...

    cylinder plumbed in reverse ?

Thanks all. It is not a condensing boiler (the heating engineer doesn't rate them and I can see his point) and the main aim is to heat the water as fast as possible so I guess it's the right way around.

    cylinder plumbed in reverse ?

We've just had a new hot water system fitted with an oil boiler and 2 vented cylinders with indirect heating coils. I suspect the coils have been plumbed in reverse as the pipe at the bottom of the cylinder is much hotter than the pipe in the middle when the boiler is running. From diagrams...
