New sockets in lathe and plaster

And another possible option may be the MT (Marshall Tuflex) dry lining boxes. One type of the above allows extra depth for the side lugs to catch on. The 'standard' type ones Screwfix Et Al do, would likely be no good as the depth of the L&P would be too thick. You will have to be careful...

    CU replacement cost

Still too rare alas Eric, quick visual checks are commonish around my way, but full PIR's, ahem, DVCR's are seldom.. Part of the trouble is, is that potential purchasers are reluctant to shell out money, partly due to them (willingly) burying their heads in the sand about potential issues...

    CU replacement cost

For a new CU itself ONLY it would likely be around the £400 mark. However, earthing may need upgrading.... £150 ish.... and the house wiring, or parts of, may require changing..... £ ????? Newer type CU's with MCB's and RCD's are more sensitive than what you have installed at present. So a...

Larger than 'normal' diameter downlights....with suitable IP

Thanks BAS and SB, Sorry for delay in response, very hectic pasy week! Think I am gonna insert small 'polo mint' type rings of PB and try with 'normal' IP downlighters. I am a bit quiet with work this week so will enjoy the challenge! Famous last words and all that! Thans again.

Larger than 'normal' diameter downlights....with suitable IP

Hi Folks, I have been looking (fruitlessly) for a couple of white recessed spots suitable for a bathroom. They are replacing old tiltable ones which are not suited to the location. Both will be in Zone 2 above the bath. The problem I have is the current (not that type of current!) cutout...

Removing consumer units from an old bedsit

My wife is an estate agent. Potential buyers of properties often ask for builders/electricians to check various things over before fully committing. If unforeseen works are required you are in a good position to offer a lower price. I would get an experienced, intelligent electrician to...

    Opinions please

I am self employed and to some extent I would say he is biting the hand that feeds him. I would deduct the original £35 as you did, as this work was not carried out due to a simple error, albeit on your part. Regarding the final door being fitted you have to bear in mind the time taken...

Trailing edge dimmer and weird squeaky noise.

Too true John. I feel agrieved at the way society is going. We can no longer speak the truth for fear of upsetting someone. What irks me is people who seemingly go out of their way to be offended by some comment or other. It's beyond ridiculous. Everyone: stop being so bl33din precious! Chill...

    Safezones and loft conversion

I agree. I would not fancy trying to hang a picture on the 'skeiling', so that makes it a skeiling ceiling in my book!

Hi Johnny, got fittings and trannys locally, think trannys are halotite; not defo. Got dimmer from TLC afterwards. Thanks RF, I have heard of kosnik or similar. 35W a piece would do nicely....

    Safezones and loft conversion

I would say that the diagonal runs are a little bit sloppy, but not unduly worrysome. The skeiling aspect is a new un on me though!! Regarding the drooping between sockets, a picture would definately help. There are guidelines re clipping cables and the spacing thereof. In some instances it...

Trailing edge dimmer and weird squeaky noise.

Thanks for replies. I got the dimmer originally as it apparently works happily from 3W to 400W. But as RF points out if I use LED lamps then the trannys will be under-worked as they are 20-60va. Never thought about this aspect of it! The trannys, which are dimmable, should not be...

Dear Ban, I would like to point out I am fully aware of the issues you raise so purposefully regarding recessed spotlighting. I am happy with the light emitted in quality, quantity, reach, lumen, spread, etc, etc, etc.... that is why I put the EDIT at the end of my post!! And maybe I want...
