    Smoke alarms

Lots of energy saving lamps are indeed fluorescent, commonly called compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). LED's are becoming more common. You should check what you already have installed regarding floros and dimmers. The small iron tube is a mystery to me. I would say if it does not mention it in...

    Wall sockets don't work

Check EVERYTHING is switched on at the fusebox. Or possibly a fuse has blown more locally by the partition wall. Have a look to see if there is a switch which has a fuse next to it, or it may just be a fuse holder with no switch. This may have a 13 amp fuse in it that may need replacing...

    door linings and doors....advise please

Very hard to say without more detail. If they are supplying linings, doors and skirting then it sounds to be likely pretty reasonable. BUT, without knowing what is being supplied it is hard to judge. Handles, hinges, latches all add up also. To me a lower end price for this job would be...

    How long will it take....

.....before I can simply glance at a bare CPC and automatically cut a piece of sleeving that matches perfectly every time?

    Downlights in the bedroom

Agree with much of FP's post. I personally like the efffect and ambience of downlighters in certain rooms. They can err on the side of creating a torch beam but this can depend on ceiling; higher ceilings = bigger flood of light. That is not to encourage butchering lovely old Victorian...

Anyone ever had a false positive testing for dead with...

BLIMEY! This is all turning into to some kind of HSE nightmare.... AGREED, MFT or multimeter fine for said purpose, which I suppose would not necessarily require calbration but simply proving....?? My argument would lean to Darwin... If testing for V you have the meter on the wrong setting...

floorboards, how do you cut yours?

Just hold the multitool at an angle and it will work a treat. As with various tools it takes a little while to get used to it. I have the green un too, boy does it make some noise! So Qu too all Bosch blue owners....does the GOP or the 10.8V multi scream its head off, or are they reasonably...

floorboards, how do you cut yours?

Am with Detlef, defo the multitool. Not sure how long batt would last but I have some other Bosch 10.8V and they generally last well. New batts are £30. The tool is great for making minimal and neat cuts and cuts the tongue quickly. Watch out to avoid nails though as the blades will blunt...

    Extra sockets

£40 for an extra socket, if he has all his tools out, is a fair price. Afterall the cable, back box and socket may cost up to £10...... I roughly charge £60 per new socket outlet, but this depends on many many variables.

    rewiring an occupied house

Occupied rewires are a nightmare.... Get the occupiers to treat themselves to a holiday! Have you warned them about the dust and general mess that will occur? They may well underestimate this aspect of it. I would change the board and put in a couple of temp radial ccts: one upstairs one...

    Dry lining boxes and Laths....

Col, the Dragons Den thought did cross my mind!! Spark, the idea for lugs on the horizontal is a good un....will incorporate it in my patent application and naturally you can have a percentage!! Notching a stud (not what Joan Collins used to do) is definately strong as houses but...

    Dry lining boxes and Laths....

Thanks Col, Have seen the boxes with semi circular lugs as you suggest so will check to see if it is Marshall Tufflex. Never thought of using gripfill etc onto wood on other side of wall as you suggest, only problem I could see is the wood moving about when screwing the back box in place...

    Dry lining boxes and Laths....

Hi folks, Does a deeper DLB exist that will happily 'lug' onto old lath and plaster walls that may be up to close to an inch thick? The deeper 47mm DLB's say they will accomodate upto 15mm in plaster depth, which is about the same as normal DLB's. It would be nicer (and much stronger)...

OK chums, what shall I do with....

I would offer to buy the PAT if I enjoyed being bored to death by endless toasters, kettles, heaters etc! Can I say well done for the statement "given that I have no desire to become a PA tester". It irks me when it is called PAT testing.....it could be called that if you were to test your...

how to hang light to a loop-in ceiling rose

You do not clip anything. The clear plastic things have screws in them...turn off ALL the power and unscrew them. Fit new fitting with cable from ceiling going to relevant terminals: Live Earth and Neutral. Then turn power back on. If you are still unsure I would say that you may not b e...
