Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Yes me again chaps with yet another question. As I understand these things the problem with those old VOELCB’s is that most homes have more than one earth and because of that an earth fault can bypass the device and prevent it from tripping. My question is would that actually happen in the...

    Death of a Workmate

Those old workmates are brilliant - don't chuck it away for goodness sake because you won't buy anything better. Repair is the way to go. My old workmate - I replaced the boards with bits left over from the kitchen worktop replacement - absolutely brilliant will probably last another decade or...

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

I had a look around the village and it's strange how you do not normally notice the mess that all those overhead cables impose on the environment. Anyway I've noticed that the houses that are furthest from the poles do have dual twisted cables so I guess they need to be tensioned more to prevent...

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Thanks for that John and bernard. That explains things for me perfectly. John there are three other houses connected to the pole by overhead cables and they are all roughly the same distance from the pole at about 100 feet. There is one odd thing though. The cable from the pole to my house is...

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Hello chaps - me again with a follow up question if I may. So I fitted the 30mA RCD no problem. Switched it on and then switched on the fuse box and the RCD immediately tripped. I pulled out all the fuses and RCB still trips so I am assuming I have some sort of earth/neutral leakage on one of...

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Thanks for the reply. As you say fitting circuit breakers to the old box adds nothing and they appear to be unavailable anyway. So thinking of fitting an upfront 100 amp 100 mA RCB at this time and then maybe swap over the CU later with MCB's and 30 mA RCB in the box and maybe a surge protector...

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Thanks for that John and yes you are correct. I simply cannot afford to go down the route of an approved tradesman and building control notification but want to make my installation as safe as I can.

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Me again chaps. One further question if I may. If I were to carry out the modification as detailed below would it be reportable work as per building regs. 1) Disable the protection functionality on the ELCB as previously discussed in this thread and use it as a shut off switch only . 2) Install...

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Thanks for that John. I do understand that to do this is not best practice but was looking for confirmation that what I was proposing was actually safe.

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Yes thanks for the replies chaps. Conny - I understand the new CU has residual current protection. Ericmark - The VOELCB looks similar to the photo. Yes you are right about the rating as the ceramic main fuse holder is embossed 60 amp. No EV charger without an upgrade.

Can I use VOELCB as Main isolation switch

Hello chaps I have an old CU that I want to replace with a modern unit. This is a TT system with an earth spike driven into the ground and a voltage operated earth leakage device installed. My question is on the new installation can I just leave that VOELCB in place so that I don't have to...
