    Becoming a damp proofer!!

sorry if i've missed anything in skipping to the end (football taking priority). in terms of the initial question - join sovereign they provide a course and then continual mentoring and tech support. you will need plastering skills, an enquiring mind and a disposition for hard work...

How to get rid of building waste

the local recycle centre will take plasterboard - it goes unfortunately in the non recyclable bin with the rest of the household waste. for some reason it can't go in the brick/rubble bin.

    ANyone tried a screwfix kitchen?

sorry but i can't help on both counts. i've not used IKEA and i've not put in a belfast sink. i note in the screwfix book that the belfast sink (42322) needs a bespoke sink base which sends a little alarm bell to me - i don't like to mix and match from different suppliers - tends to make...

    leveling

Mr orange, agree entirely with your thoughts - insults achieve nothing but our collective efforts all pulling in the same direction is the without doubt what we all need. thanks for taking the time to add your encouragement - it's really appreciated

    anyone sealed block paving?

Hysteresis, my wife calls into the warrington wilkinsons so we're in business - thanks :D for info - the other sprayer i mentioned is for the lawn - i use verdone and just spray small areas when in need - works better than applying to the whole of the lawn.

    anyone sealed block paving?

Hysteresis, i do a fair bit of brickying and can imagine the problems the cement causes. will look out for the sodium chlorate (have not come across it before) to put in a squeezy bottle to go with my kitchen sprayer bottle used for spot weeding. The neighbours are really going to want...

    anyone sealed block paving?

Hysteresis, appreciate your advice. will have a look at the resiblock - certainly not come across it before. i can see that weeds and moss may be a problem in waiting for me - i'm clear at the mo and approaching 12mths. i guess a weed killer once a yr is therefore essential before any...

    anyone sealed block paving?

no expert on this i have a block paved drive and have not sealed. the man i bought my blocks off (along with the rest of the landscaping stuff) says it does not work (for long). i'm quite happy having mastered the ancient art of removing the perennial oil stains (those with old cars) -...

    ANyone tried a screwfix kitchen?

you're too early - i'm planning to use the screwfix flatpack on my next kitchen job (f/c nov/dec this yr). the key in choosing for me is - can i get all the necessary base units to meet the kitchen needs - i've not put the screwfix range to this test yet. other than that i feel they look...

best method to foam uPVC windows

many thanks Roy & Jaffa - spot on advice. i do wet the surfaces but obviously don't take enough care and end up wetting the brick - i'll swop the washing up liquid bottle for a sprayer to get the water in more accurately. i can then use same water sprayer to do as jaffa says to help stop...

best method to foam uPVC windows

when i foam the gap between the window and brickwork it always end up with the foam coming out too much. i appreciate that you’re supposed to only foam 50% depth and allow the expansion to do the rest but how is this best achieved in practise.

    Floor screed laitance

matt has advised on the existence of acrylic leveller which i've not tried to date. it does sound the business as it dries rock hard which the latex doesn’t. i'm sold and will give it a go on next job.

    Large Loft - Conversion

for Dean's info only (as it's a touchy statement and therefore represents personal opinion) re my previous post. - the SE is the only person i pay in trade that i like paying as i know they always save me money as opposed to simply taking it. i guess in short although they fill their own...

    Large Loft - Conversion

don't necessarily get down beat just yet. if you’re planning to stay in the property for some time then the agro is worth it if the benefit to u is important. u just need to think it through a little "laterally" first to establish if it is that important given everything else in life...

    Large Loft - Conversion

Shytalz, thanks for putting the colour so eloquently on the picture. i'd had nightmares overnight on how the crane would lift the steels in. i think this one (and i never like to say it) on a financial basis is probably - find a new house.

insulating a concrete floor for carpet

for a simple fix for heat insulation i would go for the rolls of foam/polystyrene underlay used for laminate floors. Probably go for 2 layers at 90 deg. i'd be tempted to put a dpm down unless you are sure there is no damp in the floor.

    Floor screed laitance

not come across "laitance" but guess the screed is crumbly. self leveller relies on the sub floor being relatively stable. i use the leveller containing latex as i feel it minimise hair line cracking. given the sub floor is "probably" not good enough i would be tempted to put something...

    Large Loft - Conversion

no expert on this but have been looking at the idea of loft conversion for a while. i would have thought that your "new" house would have a truss rafter roof - lots of small struts held together by nailed plates all effectively blocking up the usable roof void. my understanding if this is...

    Loft Conversion advice

there are a fair few posts on the forum - worth a search and read (duzzer and mikel come to mind). i've found the following library books good: Loft Conversions: Planning, Managing and Completing Your Conversion" by Laurie Williamson Roof Construction & Loft Conversion, C N Mindham, ISBN...
