    speaker popping

It’s not likely to be the crossover, it sounds like the woofer could be hitting the magnet pole piece. Could be because the woofer is damaged, the cabinet is leaking or they are just expecting too much of it Brian

Sony LED TV KD-43X85J - drawing nearly 12W on standby

The solution at the bottom of this worked for mine: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/android-tv/standby-mode-high-power-usage-sony-oled/m-p/2602088 Brian

    Make Dumb TV Smart

Not denying, but our apps all still work. I guess they won't work forever, so a more modern option would be better Ours is a DTRT2110 Brian

Economy 7 trips circuit breaker each night when cheap rate kicks in

Where do the immersion heater cables go? There must be another box somewhere for boost control for the top heater, and probably terminals for the lower heater Sounds like something could be messed up in there probably causing both immersion heaters to be fed from the overnight consumer unit Brian

    Bathroom extractor fan backdraught shutters

Vent Axia do a range with powered shutters like this one: https://www.electrical2go.co.uk/va100xt-axial-fan-with-shutter-timer-251410c.html Other manufacturers probably do too Brian

Creda Sunhouse 79362S storage heater overheating

flameport is correct, and you should be able to turn the thermostat up and down and hear it clicking. Should be able to test the resistance between the (isolated) live and neutral terminals and see if the thermostat is actually breaking the circuit too. You may need to go later in the day if it...

Fit air admittance valve to hard to reach waste pipe

Fitted a new anti-syphoning trap to the sink which is 4m away in pipe terms and it seems to be working. I wasn't sure with it being so far away, but so far, so good Brian

Fit air admittance valve to hard to reach waste pipe

Thanks Hugh, I can't get to the stack or the bath trap. There are fitted cupboards from the bath panel side into the corner where the stack would be. The toilet is half-way down the cupboards. Not even sure the stack is there as it is a flat. It all looks really nice until you need to fix...

Fit air admittance valve to hard to reach waste pipe

Hi, I have a waste pipe that needs an air admittance valve (when toilet flushes the bath trap empties) and it is barely accessible as everything in the bathroom is boxed in. I could just about fit a self-cuting washing machine waste kit like this...

    Is this dangerous?

The topic of people not trusting tradesmen came up on another forum, and I posted a link to this so that Paul could have another example. I haven't nagged the neighbour for a while now - maybe I should ask if she ever got it sorted. I still find it amazing that the fear of being ripped off was...

Aw shucks, just a lucky guess really  Have a good Christmas and New Year David, and everyone else too, Brian.

    Bathroom fan

Does the light fitting have an energy saving bulb? Do you have the same problem if you swap it for a standard tungsten bulb? Sometimes there is enough capacitive coupling in the cables to make energy saving bulbs flash as you described, and this could also confuse the fan timer. HTH, Brian.

    Pipe thermostat

Not really answering your question, but we had a similar problem with our boiler in our integral garage. I insulated the up and over garage door with some polystyrene stuff from Wickes, and added a draught strip to the bottom of the door. The garage has not dropped below 3 degrees C since -...

Which infrared thermometer to buy ?

For the money, it's hard to beat these http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=220790 But, as ianniann says, it has a wide viewing area and you need black tape or similar to read shiniy surfaces.

Ground Level: Cold Floor & External Walls

Assuming the plasterboard doesn't go right to the floor, you should be able to get some flexible caulk or mastic underneath the edge. If it does go right to the floor, I'd be tempted to remove 1/2 inch or so along the bottom edge and fill there. As long as the plasterboard, blockwork and floor...

Ground Level: Cold Floor & External Walls

Remove the skirting board on the outside walls of one room and seal floor to blockwork to plasterboard. Then see how that feels.

Ground Level: Cold Floor & External Walls

Hi Jason, a colleague had the same problem with dot and dab. He used decorators caulk, filler and expanding foam as appropriate to seal the edges of the plasterboard to the walls wherever he could get at them. He managed two sides of the house upstairs at the gable ends in the loft. He lifted...
