Removed noise insulation from the next door house

This can be the effect of removing carpets and putting in hard floors. With laminate it would usually be floating on some type of underlay that should help. Have you been in there to see exactly what they have done ? They could have tiled onto floorboards. They may also have changed the wall...

Anyone had success with Independant wall soundproofing?

I had some success in the bathroom where I found sitting in the bath right next to the solid 9 inch wall was a bit unsettling ! I stripped the wall back to brick and created a 50mm thick independent wall fixed at the floor, ceiling and end walls, separated from the party wall by an inch air...

Thin bricks or concrete blocks needed

How much height have to before you get to ground level ? If a few courses, build up with thicker mortar beds / bricks on their side etc. Or cut up some 50mm paving slabs and use those ? Or slate, or quarry tiles, etc.

Party Wall, channel chased out for drain pipe

Rules are: no more than 1/3 depth of wall vertically no more than 1/6 depth of wall horizontally Must not compromise structural stability. With a cavity wall it is for a single leaf. For a 9" brick party wall, I've never been sure if it means the whole wall or your half of the party...

DPC - what is going on here?

Seems like they could just about have one brick high trough, or put in a cavity tray draining to the outside. Also, have they got 150mm from ground to DPC ? Simon.

DPC - what is going on here?

The cavity should extend below the DPC level as has been explained previously. If the cavity is bridged right across at DPC level, this is wrong, and it seems strange the builder would do this. However, is should be easy enough to cut this away inside the cavity before the insulation goes in...

    Floor Slab

Sounds like whatever it is, it may be a little dusty or sandy. Does it seem stronger once you to get to aggregate ? Screed or whatever should be primed with 4:1 SBR to water to stablize before tiling, and that would solve any problems with tile adhesive. Simon.

best way to mix small amounts of mortar?

They are not very good for small amounts, as most of it is coating the inside of the mixer and paddles. Worse if the mixer is old and a bit battered / caked up. Builders bucket probably just about OK. For smaller amounts, a spade is how you mix it !

    kitchen wall to extension

If you persevere you will get some very good advice on here. But expect the same leg pulling you would get as an apprentice on site. When I first did some holiday work on a site driving timber to 2nd fit houses, the gaffer spouted out a huge list of timber sizes and quantities and I thought I...

Upside down / upstairs living pros and cons

I don't like sleeping downstairs personally - you feel more vulnerable. I stayed in an upside down B&Q which offered fantastic views, but the front entrance was on the upper floor as the house was built into a hill, which avoided the shopping upstairs issue.

    New Kitchen Drainage

New build is an opportunity to do away with pipes going through walls and running outside to a gully where they can freeze, etc. I have a 4" drainage pipe coming up under my sink. It takes a bit of space in the cupboard, but then offers total flexibility for connecting things up (including a...

    Chemical fixings. - which type

In some cases chemical fixings are needed to cope with the new building materials that have also just be invented. When fixing some things into cheese blocks (sorry, aircrete), you need chemicals that can get a good hold in cheese. Simon.

Worried we are going to end up with tiny lean to!!

People certainly tend to forget about the thickness of the walls. This will get worse as insulation thicknesses are increased. Its partly the fault of the generally small houses in this country. Thus the American visitor who announces that your living room is the size of their "closet" ...

laying dpc should this be on mortar or not?

To add something else, I was told once upon a time to lay an UNEVEN bed under the DPC so that gravity will lock the wall above in place and it cannot slide. It certainly makes sense. If you do that, you have to put mortar below and above obviously. The DPC is textured plastic for a key, whilst...
