Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Thanks. No, I didn't insert anything into the pan to stop the leak or absorb the water before I put the new seal and pipe in. The loo has been dismantled for about a week while I got round to this job with the new seal so it had chance to dry out. Yes, it's a normal right-angle flush pipe. If I...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the pipe isn't in too far; I'm not even sure it's in far enough! The water level in the pipe is perhaps 2cm below the level of the pan rim, and steady at that level.

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Hi all. I'm trying to fix an issue that started as a leak between the toilet pan and the flush pipe but has now become confusing. Standard floor mounted toilet pan. Small hidden dual flush cistern within the built in cupboard behind the pan. I've replaced the pan/pipe seal and stuffed the pipe...

Steel/acrylic canopy over back door - advice / thoughts?

Thanks for those comments. I expect you're both right.

Steel/acrylic canopy over back door - advice / thoughts?

I want to install a canopy over our back door, which is quite exposed in wet weather. I've found some nice-looking ones made by a German company called Polymer. The range is called LightLine. I can buy online and the cheapest price I've found is £350 delivered for a 1500x950 canopy: I...

Gas fire - should gas feed pipe run through a tube?

Sadly my wife had other plans for me, bengasman. Nice idea though. :) Thanks namsag for your input. If you're right I hope the RGI will tell me I can channel out the wall and drill the hole into the chimney void ready for him and just leave him to feed the (wrapped) pipe through and connect...

Gas fire - should gas feed pipe run through a tube?

Thanks for the reply, bengasman. If the pipe can't be chased into the wall for a short distance then I'll have to reconsider my plan. I'll call the CORGI fitter tomorrow and see if he can pop in when he's passing and tell me what he wants me to do to prepare for his pipe. I'll find...

Gas fire - should gas feed pipe run through a tube?

Odd topic title but here's a better explanation. 10 year-old house. I've capped off the isolator valve, ripped out the old gas fire and yesterday opened out the hole in the wall to expose the full chimney. I've bought a new Gazco Logic Convector and new fire surround/mantel. I'll be doing...

    Hotpoint WMF760 banging on spin

We have a 3 month old Hotpoint WDD960 that's also marketed as Super Silent. It's very good until it reaches full-speed spin when it's anything but silent. I can hear resonance and rattling within the casing and if I put pressure on one side the rattling subsides. The machine as a whole doesn't...

Cooker hood quiet & powerful until duct is connected

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. My wife has told me to connect the bloody thing up and just leave it. The only alternative is to drill a much larger hole through the wall and fit a full-diameter vent, which seems like overkill. I don't have the tools to do this so we'd need to fork...

Cooker hood quiet & powerful until duct is connected

That's a good idea. That'll show whether it's the duct or the vent that's the biggest restrictor. It's a 3-speed fan. The performance on the highest setting with the duct in place is worse than the performance at the lowest setting with the duct disconnected. :( It's noisier too. Our old...

Cooker hood quiet & powerful until duct is connected

It vents through the (external) wall, through a backdraft flap and then a brick-sized vent. I haven't disturbed those components - the flap and the vent brick are the original ones that the builders used. I've a feeling my ducting is too small, but to enlarge it I'll have to enlarge the hole...

Cooker hood quiet & powerful until duct is connected

I've nearly finished installing our new kitchen. I've fitted a new chimney extractor above the hob that - despite being the £99 cheapo from B&Q - is quiet and powerful... until I connect it to the ducting through the wall. Our house is ten years old. The wall duct is offset from the...

Solid wood worktop - butt joints - correct sealer/glue?

Thanks Symptoms. It seems Polymite/Cascamite/Extramite are now all the same thing. Just need to find some now...

Solid wood worktop - butt joints - correct sealer/glue?

Just about to start a DIY project to install new solid wood worktops with my Dad. I need to make two butt joints. I'll be using biscuits and bolts. The instructions for the worktops say I should apply an end grain sealer or Cascamite glue to the joint surfaces, plus a thin bead of silicone...

    draughty toilet overflow!

Put a right-angle pointing down on the internal end of the pipe and a length of pipe that's long enough so the end is submerged in the water in the cistern. That'll stop the draught. Provided your pipe is a regular overflow diameter then it won't be narrow enough to create a syphon. It's...

Gas fire with chimney: needs a hood above the coals? (pics)

By way of follow-up for anybody who's interested, and anybody who told me that I was facing certain death with my plans, our helpful local Corgi man came over last week and took a look at the fire. Provided I create a new hood whose dimensions are appropriate for this fire and chairbrick then...

Gas fire with chimney: needs a hood above the coals? (pics)

By the way, don't be deceived by the wide camera angle in the first photo - the new oak is the same size as the old MDF surround. It's not a small room and in our opinion the oak looks perfect. I'm not really seeking opinions on whether people like the style we've chosen but thanks anyway. ;)

Gas fire with chimney: needs a hood above the coals? (pics)

:) We're fully expecting it to, along with the two matching oak furniture pieces we had made at the same time. That's the plan. My dad built a similar fire surround in his French cottage using unseasoned oak that is drying out in a beautifully natural way. Today I spoke to the company that...

Gas fire with chimney: needs a hood above the coals? (pics)

Would you say a modern open fire will be more efficient then? We definitely don't want a glass-fronted fire. I know nothing about our existing fire so I can't do any meaningful comparisons. Most of the websites I'm finding don't seem to list prices for fires. :? Edit: Just found this, which...
