    Anglia 105E fuel pump

I had an SU pump on a Morris Oxford I converted to diesel but it was a bit intermittent, you would feel the power dropping off so you had to drive over a manhole cover or something similar and that would start it up again.:) Peter

Charging a flat battery off the alternator!

A fully charged battery should theoretically read 2.2 volts per cell on an open circuit, if a battery is continuously charged much in excess of that, as on a battery charger it will result in degradation of the cells mainly due to loss of electrolyte. I have a couple of 12v 100ah batteries as...

    Renault Trafic

A failed MAF doesn't prevent it from starting, at least not on PSA vehicles, so I suspect its something you have done while working on it. I suggest that you carefully check all the connections Peter

Carbon residue on the starter commutator

If its a starter with a reduction gear, lack of grease in that will slow it down considerably. Peter

    Handbrake Cables

I don't think its the quality of the linings so much as the hardness/softness of the material that is the determining factor. Peter

    Handbrake Cables

This sounds like the same arrangement I have on my 406s, I have never had one with a good handbrake, I think the drum/shoe assembly is too small. I have heard of people who do have a good handbrake and I think its all down to the type of linings. They only work well after you have been driving...

2006 Fiesta, driveshaft or differential noise

The 2.2 with hydractive wasn't bad but the 2.0. was dreadful, used to pitch on uneven roads, I put all new spheres on mine and replaced the trailing arm bearings, to little avail. The 2.0. was much better on fuel, would do up to 60 mpg, you had difficulty getting 50 mpg from the 2.2. Strangely...

I replaced my last XM with an early C5 but was rather disappointed with it compared with the XM. Peter

2006 Fiesta, driveshaft or differential noise

Hi Dave I had about six or seven 2.1 td estates over a period of about 15 years. Lovely cars, comfortable, roomy and 50+ mpg driven gently. None of them went rusty until about 6 or 7 years ago when it seems the galvanising expired. We had two most of the time, one for my wife and I even...

2006 Fiesta, driveshaft or differential noise

Hi John I had a support bearing fail on an XM to the extent that the shaft came out of the gearbox! But it never made a sound, not that I am suggesting that it couldn't. The noise on a failing bearing is usually due to the case hardening failing leaving lots of little pits that the bearings...

2006 Fiesta, driveshaft or differential noise

I would think most likely its a wheel bearing. Listen to the noise when you are cornering, if it becomes noisier or quieter in one direction it will be a bearing. The noise will usually not be present when there is no load, i.e. wheel jacked up. Peter

Low fuel pressure Nissan Primastar 62 plate

I will second Johns comments, diesel specialists usually know what they are doing, sadly many dealers don't as they don't get enough experience of these problems. Find a good diesel specialist. Peter

Charging a flat battery off the alternator!

Maybe if its a very modern car with one of the new fangled 'smart systems' but everything I have owned has recharged via the alternator assuming the battery is in good order. A modern alternator can have an output of 100 amps or more so unless you are driving with everything in the car switched...

Tractor mower totally dead, even when we try to jumpstart

I have a Countax which is sometime hesitant to start, this is due to a poor earth connection between the starter motor and the engine, you some times get a shower of sparks from it when you try to start it but it always starts eventually so I haven't done anything about it yet. Do charge the...
