    An Aluminium welding task

I wonder if your 'newer ' one is an inverter type John, without a heavy mains transformer, if it is, possibly the back emf from the inductance of the transformer on the old one gave a better arc., I don't know how old mine is, at least 40 years I would think, it has no writing and very little...

    An Aluminium welding task

I came across the hardware bit a while back John and found you could still get the carbon rods, so I got some, they will likely stay in the cupboard until I'm to old to use them but you never know.o_O:confused: Peter

    An Aluminium welding task

When I was doing diesel conversions I sometimes had to change the shape of a sump to fit the vehicle, what I used was one of those brazing attachments you can connect to your stick welder. It still wasn't easy as the alloy would suddenly turn to 'water' but I usually managed it. Warning though...

    Ratchet ring spanners

I find them useful but I don't buy expensive ones as I am more likely to lose them than break them. I buy mostly 'Silverline' tools they are very reasonably priced on ebay and Toolstation and good quality. Peter

Sorry I read WD40, dyslexic as well! Never heard of DW40. Peter

Penetrating Oil DW40 ..... any good?

WD40 isn't primarily a lubricant, it was designed as a 'water displacement ' fluid back in the time of distributors and such like things although it does have lubricating properties but proper lubricants are better. There are several very good videos on youtube of penetrating oil comparisons...

DAB in the car..............what a waste of money!!

It depends where you live, DAB coverage is not as good as FM, I don't have it but those that do report a variable signal down here. DAB is on a higher frequency than FM which means it doesn't travel so well, but it wouldn't have thought it was high enough to couple well through a 'glass...

    Electronics in cars..............what a nightmare

I feel the same from a maintenance point of view, when the cars were not only simpler but the engine was the right way round it was much easier to fit a clutch and most other things. The upside is that we now have diesels that are quiet, do 60 mpg and are reliable if you run the right ones, my...

Halfords Tool Chest - Advanced vs Regular?

I bought one from ebay a few years ago, 'slightly damaged' and it was only slight but a fraction of the cost I have seen some for. The metal is not all that thick and the drawers can feel a little flimsy if the have a lot of weight in them but it works fine. Its halved the time it takes to do...

Peugeot 206 HDi 2.0 engine problem

I had a C5 with a similar engine John and every now and again it would make a loud knocking noise, then it would go away until one day the car dissapeared in a huge fog and emptied the contents of the cooling system through the exhaust. I never did investigate why, someone bought it off me for...

Peugeot 206 HDi 2.0 engine problem

Sounds like the head gasket, unusual for those engines. The knock was probably due to water in one or more cylinders. Shame, its doable but a lot of work. Peter

Peugeot 206 HDi 2.0 engine problem

I have just had a 110 hp version of this engine go to very low power and black smoke. It had little or no turbo boost, I disconnected the air intake pipe across the top of the engine, put my hand over the engine end and it nearly stopped the engine so no leaks there, I felt the pipe from the...

Peugeot 206 HDi 2.0 engine problem

Those engines are usually bombproof but the crankshaft pulley can fail at high mileage causing the auxiliary belt to run unevenly - that can make a clatter, but not usually at tickover. Watch the tensioner at tickover and see if its jumping up and down, keep watching while the engine is revved...

    Nissan Leaf rear brakes

Your'e getting brave John venturing into electric vehicles! They don't have valves or CRT's in them you know and an be a bit dangerous, mains EHT? :D The electronics should I suppose be the easy part but I'm afraid digital systems have passed me by. Peter

    Spray Painting Advice

Getting a good finish is more a matter of trial and error than anything else. I used to do a lot of spraying in years past, in the days of cellulose, and always had to use more thinners than is normally suggested to get it to flow out nicely. On the other hand I had 'a bit of an accident' with...

    Tyre seal breaking

In the olden days before tubeless tyres I used to drive the front wheel up on to and around the tyre - that used to do it. Peter
