Mains smoke / heat alarms questions

Thanks for the responses. My builder inspector initially said that if we had smoke alarms in each room then we could escape having to put FD30 doors on all enclosed rooms as part of our renovation which is what we did. Roll forward, as I renovation get delayed, he couldn't remember saying that...

Mains smoke / heat alarms questions

We're at the first fix stage for wiring up mains smoke alarms and heat detectors as part of a large renovation of a sizable house. Pretty much every room will have a detector (our choice). 1. Whichever interlinked smoke / heat alarm we go for, am I right in thinking that if one goes off, then...

    Armoured cable

Hi Just to satisfy my own curiosity, at what point is an armoured cable needed? Is it purely when running mains cable significantly outside or can an ordinary 3 core and earth cable run from an internal fuse board / consumer unit and through the external wall to an isolator switch or into an...

Alternative to stone / cast balustrade

Had a quote from Haddonstone, one of the major stone companies for a balustrade but got quoted a lot of money i.e. excess of £10k for a large surround to my garden patio. I'd like the bottle effect to create that grand effect for a patio surround but just wondered if there was a more cost...

Views on plastered in GU10 light sockets or LED profiles

I'm thinking of going for these ASTRO https://www.astrolighting.com/products/1248017 priced around £35 each including all the parts. Spoken to a few different retailers and they seem to suggest the Astro are better than the All Led. As you said, just need to make sure that the junction boxes...

Issue with new stairs (headroom clearance under 2m)

We need to have two new straight flight of stairs installed as part of our house renovations. The problem is, we want to avoid a winder or L shape and have a straight flight and to do so will require us to breach building regs by reducing our headroom clearance of an overhead RSJ by 1.85m to...

    Air con installers here?

Just to add, due to the restrictions in the ceilings, it's going to be impossible to get anything realistically more than 100mm ducting in around the areas. One firm said they can use flexible insulated ducting or smaller size and the other said (which I believe is correct) that going below...

    Air con installers here?

Yes have had two companies visit, one has provided a written quote and waiting on the other, but one has suggested a ducted option from the utility area with flexible ducting where as the one above has suggested a ducted option from the utility into the wall of the kitchen area (which forms part...

    Air con installers here?

Hi So I have been given two Panasonic options for wall mounted and ducted as per the image specs. Finished ceiling high will be about 2.5m / 2.6m. The ceilings have circa. 100mm Kingspan insulation together with another 150mm or 200mm of rockwool on the inside to fill some of the large void...

    Air con installers here?

Hi I there any air con installers here? I have an open plan living and kitchen area of circa 80m2. I had a quote from a couple of different companies to supply and fit a concealed unit in a utility room ceiling (the whole house is being renovating so no ceilings up yet). As we have limited...

Air conditioning - planning permission needed?

Hi Is planning permission need for an air conditioning unit to be installed in a residential property? I have looked online and am getting mixed signals with some air con installers saying they can sell units which get around pp requirements because there is no external unit where as others...

    Recommendation for trimless ceiling speaker

Hi Could I please have some recommendations for a trimless ceiling speaker. This will essentially go into my open plan living room area, slightly behind me / my sofa. I have already run some large heavy duty speaker cable 4mm cable to the ceiling where it will drop, but now before the...

Views on plastered in GU10 light sockets or LED profiles

Generally speaking, if the light fitting type is one that you plaster in, I'm not sure you'd be able to get access to the parts that would need replacing anyway as it would be a tight fit to get your hand inside and to the back to change anything?

Views on plastered in GU10 light sockets or LED profiles

I'm at a stage of plastering ceilings and walls which has plasterboard. Before then I'm thinking of whether I should install plaster-in style light sockets in the ceiling or LED profiles. Am I right to worry about the headache that I will face if one of these units break down and need...
