No it does not need to be off if clearing the drain pipe. You need to go a bit carefully though so you don't damage the inside of the pipe.

A single item will spin dryer than a full load at a given speed, different programs also spin at different speeds to prevent damage to clothes. Check how wet the clothes seem to be when the wash cycle has finished filling and see if all the clothes are equally wet.

We have successfully replaced the reed switches on the small PCB's on these, its a bit awkward due to size and making sure it is the correct way round. It does make you feel good though when it is done especially at a fraction of the cost of a replacement board or tank.
