Cost is the main reason for using galvanised - much cheaper than stainless. Grade A4 SS and 8.8 mild steel have the same nominal tensile strength.

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

So ball park cost of say, five internal and one external unit, assuming that would be practical? The external unit would probably have to go on the patio to the rear as I think the land to the side belongs to the flat above. Then I guess a considerable amount of ducting would be required for...

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

So is the external unit basically working in the same way as an ASHP? How many internal units can be run off one external unit? Just looked up online and one source reckons six times more efficient than standard electric heating. Makes me wonder why these aren’t used more often - at first look...

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

OK, thanks. Why would that work out so much cheaper than the current units?

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

Is it possible that the existing wall hung units are ready to be connected up to an external air conditioning pump? I don’t know, but they look very similar to the combined air con / heating units in my office. If so, would there be any cost saving in replacing or connecting to air con?

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

Yeah, could be some kind of solid fuel system. Given it’s location next to the external doorway seems unlikely it’s any kind of feature wood burner or multi fuel stove though. Yeah, not sure how the freeholder would feel about locating an oil tank.

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

Don’t know. Obviously part of the freehold but the one I looked at is ground floor with another flat above.

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

Thanks. What would be the benefit of air conditioning, in place of the current wall hung heaters (other than the obvious summer cooling).

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

No, it’s a converted flat of what use to be a small terrace of houses, probably 1930s built, and it has its own hot water tank in a cupboard in the kitchen. The heaters must run directly off the electricity supply and it’s not a communal system as the property next door appears to have oil...

    Drilling Through Soldier Course

If you are drilling through the soldier course, you will probably be drilling through a lintel behind it, which is a big no no. What’s to stop you core drilling through the concrete roof?

Ball Park cost of Heating Installation?

Just been to look at a flat. The biggest issue I see with it is the fact that at the moment the only source of heating is the wall mounted air-con style ones, and hot water heated by an immersion heater in the tank. I can only imagine that will get very expensive at today’s prices. No gas...

We always say, “to be installed strictly in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations”. But as the fixings are only holding the frame in position and not holding it down, 100mm embedment will be fine.

I swear this was Lizzie's final dutiful act of service to the nation - to ensure she didn't peg it before Boris ended his tenure as PM. Who knows what he would have started waffling about when he got his notes muddled. Probably Grandma Pig or something  Yeah, we can think what we like...

    Energy Cap

Although back then suicide rates were through the roof because it was so easy to top yourself by sticking your head in the gas oven and breathing in those noxious coal derived gases. Following the discovery of North Sea gas the huge job of converting supplies and appliances to run on natural...

    Soldier bricks and new opening

The worst that could happen is that a triangle of masonry from above will fall out. But as you’re telling us the door frame wasn’t even supporting the masonry my guess is that it will be ok. Try not to slam any doors in the meantime

What's an ordinary office oik? If I have a deadline I have to work late and my pay slip still reads exactly the same at the end of the month. Same for most of my friends in office jobs.

    Energy Cap

I think he's asking whether reflecting light onto a solar panel has the same energy efficiency as non-reflected light. Even the most efficient mirrors won't reflect 100% of the light they receive so it will always be slightly less energy efficient to reflect light onto a solar panel than replace...
