Removed polystyrene ceiling tiles !!! Advise

A skim is your best bet Mary, if you want to preserve the coving, even if you replace the boards a skim will be needed. Dependant on the extent of the ceiling damage, if it's just aesthetic, then a skim will sort it.

    Moving a radiator

I'm doing some work on a party wall and want to take the radiator off temporarily. I'm not clear on how to do this as when I've tried to drain the system in the past, it just kept on running for hours, suggesting that I'd not stopped the flow into the boiler. It's an Ariston. Can anyone advise...

    NEW CARPET/DOOR CLOSE PROBLEM

I would go for option 2 without a doubt. Better yet, if you can borrow an electric plane you'll save the 40 quid. You shouldn't have too many problems but watch out for the plane kicking the edge off, ie, don't go over the door edge from the inside.

    Ants!

Get a can of lager and two tea spoons of sugar. Lay the sugar in a thin line where you think the ant run might be. Now sit in a comfy chair and drink the lager while you watch their shennanigans!

    Noisy Neighbours

It's a good idea ogoshi. I've even considered paying for the installation of soundproofing on their side of the party wall. Regrettably, our relatively new neighbours appear to be on the shy side, they don't even answer the door if anyone knocks! But it is something I'll bear in mind.

    Noisy Neighbours

Well ok, they're not that bad, but next door the internal doors are the big heavy fire doors, and they close with such a bang that things rattle through our house that shouldn't rattle! My concern is that we could get new neighbours who add to this audible delight with a bit of boombastic...

    Insulating walls

The 'advice' for doing internal walls....not very comprehensive is it? What size battens? estimated cost? effectiveness? etc. Also, for external (cavity walls) can this be done on a DIY basis?

    central Heating

Try 'bleeding' the air out. Open the little valve at the top of the rad' (special key used which if you don't have one, are available from DIY shops)this will allow the air to escape, you might need to let a little water through as well so have some towels handy.

Where to start with an extension

And what's more, (logged in this time) I built a porch, ok, all brick, nice 3 sided roof, double glazed windows. But, it still cost me a grand, and that was 4 years ago, and I didn't need planning permission, or plans, and I did every last bit of the work myself, start to finish. Labour is very...

    Tiles? All the same size....right?

    How do you remove artex?

A good steam paper stripper will shift it, but it's not for the faint hearted. Personally, I would do either of the following: Scrape the sharp bits off all over, then re-skim with finishing plaster (it does a grand job, believe me) or just set about ripping the boards down and re-new them...

    Tiles? All the same size....right?

My options on the tiles came down to: Patch & make do, or resurface the whole room with new tiles. I didn't fancy the latter so I had a stab at fitting the bigger tiles alonside the shorter ones. To my amazement, I got away with it because the tiles generally are a hexagon oblong with the square...

    copper pipe corrosion

I don't buy that. If flux was capable of causing corrosion in copper pipes then it wouldn't exactly be of much use would it? I will certainly bow to scientific evidence on this one though of course.
