    RCD connection query.

Today I came across an din - rail mounted RCD , wired into a 2 way enclosure , incomers fed straight from the cut-out straight and outgoers to a Old Style 100A Wylex Plug-In type CU. Obviously , any leakages to earth over the 30mA rating would trip the whole incoming supply to the CU...

    oh dear (Crafty's shed update)

If you don't have a tester, Why not flick your sockets mcb off at the shed end (leaving the rcd on) , remove a shed socket, and short a neutral to the earth, see if you can get the rcd to trip out. This will at least verify the actual mechanical operation of the device. Only trouble is ...

    Thoughts on this setup

Why not replace the rcd unit that goes to the shower with a proper shower consumer unit, ie one with rcd and mcb protection. This way you have your fault & overload protection, and can still use the RCD to isolate the shower (because it has 2 poles it is an acceptable isolating device!!)...

    Preparing for a re-wire

Also, if you have kitchen sockets on more than one wall, the horizontal run cannot pass horizontal through the corners of walls, ie you can run a horizontal row, then on the last socket on that wall you have to go vertical up the wall , along the ceiling then back down vertical to the new...

3Ph Appliances and Loads in General

What rating are the main fuses and tails?? Do you have 100 Amps per phase available at the intake?? Can't you go back to the intake and take out a new feed from the main distribution board , or at worst split tails, add a new TP&N switchfuse and run a temp supply for the new appliances?? If...

Did'nt you need to get planning permission for the conservatory?? If so, chances are, they already know about it, and will be on to you!!!

    Fitting a shower

Andy, I very much doubt you have 10mm cable. I'm assuming your cable was of a spec that matched your 30 amp breaker - you probably have 6mm. I advise you check thoroughly, because otherwise, if you just uprate your breaker , its possible you could draw a current through the cable which is...

    Balancing Loads Between 3 Phases

Although you multiply 10 and assume that it will be 10 times the current flowing in total , you have to bear in mind that each cabin will use different amounts of current depending on who is in there, some guy may use 20 amps, but another may use 40 amps and mr economical may only use 10 amps ...

    THE electrician

Crafty, you've used black (taped blue) as your neutral , and grey (taped green/yellow) as your earth. If the electrician decides to swap the grey and the black cables of the swa(to the iee guidelines grey sleeved blue to neutral - black sleeved green/yellow to earth ) , I wonder if he'll join...

Adding to a full Consumer unit

Out of interest, you say your original CU is full. What is the rating on the main switch of the CU, does it have a built in RCD and how old approx is it and are your current tails 16mm or 25mm. It MAY be possible to offload a circuit (eg doorbell transformer) , onto another circuit (eg...

    freezer

Yes, if the fuse holder of the fcu has a screw cover, just unscrew it and pop it out, or if its just a plastic pop-in type of fcu, just lever the notch out with a small insulated screwdriver.

    THE electrician

With ref to your electrician's work. EXPOSED INCOMERS. AAAAARGH. CHOC BLOCKS IN CU. AAAAARGH. I reckon the way he's goin with his cables, won't be long before he pulls that cu away from the masonry. For what it would have cost for a smal piece of 3/4 ply. Bet the NIC would'nt have...

    THE electrician

Would'nt she let you loose in there to tidy it up ??? Wait til he sees the shed end!!! He'll wonder why the hell you called him up. Could'nt the fuse fairy have paid you a visit, or is it because you want him to check its all ok?? By the look on the forum pics, the shed install seems fine...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Did the consumer unit have an rcd neutral bar and a non-rcd neutral bar and were they connected properly?? Have heard stories of them being mixed up thus causing non rcd circuits to trip the rcd due to imbalances on the neutral. Easiest way would have been to check above , then replace...

    Install appliances

You can't rely on the fuses you have used in the plug tops! Supposing you go away and someone minds your house (or you sell it!!) and someone uprates the fuses to 13 amps in each one. It could be possible to draw more than 27 amps through that original 2.5mm cable (especially in a fault...

    spur off an FCU

No, because then you would be powering two sockets through a cable capable of only carrying 27 amps. The fcu is fused so the cable would be protected , but the problem is that the total loading on these sockets would only be of the rating of fuse in the fcu. If you think of 2 heavy appliances ...

    WYLEX RCD 63A 30mA.

Is this consumer unit SOLELY for the shower, or do you intend to run everything through it ??? If the answer is the latter, forget it, you'll be best with a split board that has a 100A main switch and at least an 80 amp RCD. Tlc have Wylex 100A Main Switched, 80A RCD 12 way splits for £36...

    Diversity

sparkacus, The regs to NOT specify cable types for individual appliances!!! Basically, you have to use a design procedure, which involves working out the DESIGN CURRENT. DESIGN CURRENT is the assumed current , and is calculated using diversity. You DO NOT have to use MAXIMUM DEMAND for...
