    consumer units

By new, I mean recent, as in last year or 2. By part P, i meant Notification etc. Just an example of why it is good for the industry to check work if not by an approved installer. A Diyer able to do Inspection & Testing would know all about Part P and notification.

THIS IS MAD- Have you seen the shower instalation on that forum?? Here is the url. http://electrical-contractor.net/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000945.html IT IS OUTRAGEOUS. And it's new wiring - Whatever happened to Part P ???????? It HAS to be a wind up.

Security Alarm System - Assistance Required

Check your Veritas instruction manual, they normally show the connections for bell enclosures of other brands . Also vice versa, check your bell enclosure instructions to see if it contains the connections for Texecom panels. Other than that, the above statements seem correct, although it...

    pme question (now with pics)

Pulling the service fuse will only isolate the very top part of the enclosure (Where the live tail goes out!). The rest of the enclosure will still be live. Seriosuly, I'd get your earth wire ran to your MET , then phone the DNO and tell them your PME has no earth wire coming out of it, and...

At least you would'nt come across the 'I need to get power to my garage' dilemma!! SOunds like your garage is a major powerhouse!!!

    Cable concerns

Maybe the house was previously two seperate flats!! Maybe the DNO has graced you with 300 Amps of 3-phase hence the big switchgear !! :P , although without a photo its hard to tell, and it is doubtful. A photo of it would be helpful, then people could analyse it for you.

    adding socket from shower

Why not find a socket in the bedroom , spur with 2.5mm down to under the floorboards , along the floorboards, then back up the wall in the corner of the room with a nice piece of mini trunking , then pop the cable up into the loft space, and then come back down with it at the point near your...

Urgent help required with CU or im not getting any dinner

Can you get access to a multimeter or some kind of voltage tester? Meters can be picked up for as little as £5 in a Argos etc. That way you can find out if the mains is getting there. It all seems as if it could be both a blown oven , and a blown MCB , due to the vast overcurrent, but you...

Urgent help required with CU or im not getting any dinner

Shiny and Nice?? Nah - Looks like an ugly old plastic jobby - No wonder they stuck it down the back out the way!! - Although not practiceable - especially in these circumstances, smokey should have been able to turn it off at the wall once the fire broke out! He's lucky thte breaker went...

Urgent help required with CU or im not getting any dinner

From what I can see on that pic it looks like theres 4 wires in the ring MCB, so I guess there are 2 rings running around the house, but have been joined here due to lack of MCB's in this consumer. You also have 2 lighting cables running (suggesting an upstairs and a downstairs circuit...

    Shaver Socket

Don't do this - One day somebody will go in your bathroom and decide to plug in something like a hairdryer, and supposing it accidentally falls out of their hand into the bath - and then they go to retrieve it - without unplugging it!! - IT IS NOT WORTH IT! -unless you meant a non-isolated...

    Consumer units

At this current moment, Wylex have a 12 Way split for £36 , and the MCB's are £3 each - blanks are 50p. These prices are at TLC, I bought a couple last week - They have tons of them! You may have to ask them , as they are on special price at the moment.

    Downlights for a Bathroom

Ok, sorry, if SELV then they don't need bonding. although it's worth running an unconnected at either end length of 4mm from the nearest bond location to somewhere near the light feeds - just in case in the future, someobody (or even you) replace one (or all) of them with Mains type...

    Downlights for a Bathroom

You'll need special bathroom downlights. They have a rubber sealing to keep the steam out of the enclosure , and have a splash proof glass casing to protect the bulb. They will need an IP for splashproof at the minimum. If you were to fit your others A) It would be dangerous with water...

Seven days left of using old colours!

I understand your reasons for using old cable to disguise the work, but harmosnised colours were also available BEFORE Jan 2005 (when work became notifiable) , so surely it would be technically possile to disguise notifiable work with harmonised cable, because the new harmonised colours were...

    3 phase question

Thanks guys for the info. With reference to Crafty's points of a TP&N distribution board. But you CAN still have seperate CU's running from a TP&N Distribution board - So no need to get rid of them! Yes, the actual place I was referring to does have a TP&N DB, and obviously with its TP&N...

    3 phase question

So at the actual split (ie where the henley block for neutrals would divert off to other consumers) there is a high potential , but as long as the incomer to it is left intact , then all neutrals after it are free of potentials, and joining into that block would be ok, provided that the incomer...

    3 phase question

Just for curiosity, assuming there were three consumer units all independently fed using different phases. If you were working on a circuit on one of the consumer units and you flicked the mcb for that circuit off (Not the isloator!! ) (thus cutting the live feed to that circuit !) whilst...
