    patch drying time

Hi folks, y'day I patched a small area of render on an exterior wall using ScrewFix ready mix mortar. The area is small - about a square foot. I intend to screw 2 wooden batons onto an area that includes the patch - how long should I wait for the patch to dry before drilling the holes into it...

    Quick raised bed question...

I am about to assemble raised beds in my back yard to grow mainly herbs. I will be adding rubble before the top soil and have a ready supply in the form of the old clay tiles that came off my roof when it was re-tiled a few years ago. Before I go ahead and chuck them in to the bottom of the...

Yorkshire women jailed for half-million £ fraud

I'm not trying to give these people a ready-made excuse, but if care-workers were paid anything other than the miserable pittance that they do get, they might just not have been tempted to do the crime...

    Barginateous IP camera?

Hi folks, I'm fed up! One of my neighbours' pets is pooping in my front yard, and not to put too a fine a point on it, these poops are too large and firm to be cats, so I imagine they come out of a dog! There's 2 dogs live in my road - which can it be??!! Anyway, I never catch the miscreant at...

condensation in a double glazed panel

Hi, I have upvc framed double glazing throughout my old terraced house, which in the main works well, but a couple of the panels here and there are permanently slightly wet inside - there's moisture streaking down the panel inside. I guess I could simply buy new panels if I carefully measure...

    Hep 2 0 failure...

That's what I thought, as I sat there looking at it - there's 2 makes of pipe been used in the house, John Guest 'speedfit' which has markings all along the pipe so you can see that the pipe's gone in the right distance and the other stuff, which has no markings... grrrr. So in future I'll just...

    Hep 2 0 failure...

HoHoHo - have traced problem to an issue found between the instructions and the fitting... the fitter (me). right-hand pipe only inserted into fitting by a few mm, so nowhere near seated properly - indeed, 12mm short. It's a wonder it has been water-tight at all. Am suitably...

    Hep 2 0 failure...

Not really a disaster, but I wonder what went wrong. This morning I thought I heard water dripping and found a leaking push-fit joint in the cold water pipe. This joint has been in place for about 5 years, and not disturbed in any way. It's in the bathroom, which doesn't get at all cold and is...

    switch causes noise

I have recently setup a hifi upstairs. The boiler downstairs in the kitchen is connected to the upstairs ring, by a spur that drops down from the ring circuit in the ceiling void. Every time the boiler switches on, there's a loud click heard through the speakers - how can I prevent this?

    Royal Mail

BTW, I forgot to say that the Wickes customer service bloke told me that the courier driver is supposed to take a photo of the property on the occasion of their leaving a card to tell you they had tried, as part of their audit trail. I gather this is general practice amongst the better couriers...

In their defence, I think the RM are still the best of the bunch - I know a few of them from my local boozer and they (the long-term employees, at least) still have quite a strong sense of decency and a desire to get the job done properly... they are acting under the increased pressure applied...

Self-set Buddleja - stop it coming back...

Hi folks, I have a tatty back yard which I want to improve. It is currently very poor quality concrete - cracked and broken, over builder's spoil - brick fragments, old tiles and soil. This summer a buddleja grew out of the cracks and a few weeks ago I hacked it off at ground level (the cut up...

    Stairs that pivot...

Anyone ever taken up the first few steps on a staircase in order to utilise the space underneath to store things (in my case probably outdoor boots and shoes...)? I'm thinking of replacing the removed steps with 2 sections of steps that pivot up out of the way to reveal the storage space...
