    Can I save my porch?

Turned out this was a bit of a mess. No DPC, and the rot had spread in to the frame. Ended up ripping it out and building a dwarf wall with some new upvc windows and door. Gave me a chance to move the door around to the front too!

    UPVC Window Cill Installation

Hey guys, Back with another summer of diy adventures! I've built a little dwarf wall for a porch and I've got all the windows and door ready to fit.... I was wondering how to go about installing the cill on to the dwarf wall? Seems some suggest floating it, others fixing it. I've got...

    Can I save my porch?

Great its been one of those jobs I've put off for 2 summers but its on my radar for this year. Would I just cut it out (and put temporary supports on place under the posts) and ask someone to cut my another one? Hopefully it might be something I can buy off the shelf. I was planning on...

    Can I save my porch?

To be honest; the house is being done up to sell at some point in the next couple of years. I don't really have the budget to replace the entire porch. It needs a bit of TLC but it's in decent nick, apart from the sill on the door-side being rotten at the hinge post. The post itself seems...

    Flashing question

Hey guys I'm making good some of the outside of the house this summer. I'm at a bit of a loss on how to give the join between the two window frames a good finish. Currently there is a bit gap of an inch, then some very tired flashing which is full of holes and disc cutter marks and then a...

    Different levels of concrete floor

Hey guys, I have an old outhouse that I want to bring up to the house level. The outhouse has two levels currently, with the lowest having a dpm underneath it (about 1inch below DPC). The other level doesn't have anything. It's only a single skin building, but whats the best way to raise...

2nd had upvc porch doesn't quite fit!

Cheers for the advice guys! I've finally got around to building the foundations; put a single course of face bricks on top of the DPC today so that I can infill the slab to bring it level with the back door. I remeasured and Im 2300mm short at the top. Whats the best way of fixing the...

    Porch foundations

Thans for the advice guys. Footings went down a treat! Bit hot the day I had to mix it up sweated buckets :) Got the engineerings in now I need to fill in the middle. I was thinking 75mm concrete DPM/25mm sand blinding and some hardcore underneath that nicely compacted. Is this OK? I'll be...

    Porch foundations

Hi guys, I'm extending an outhouse (single skin brick work) to install a upvc porch. I'm wondering how deep the foundations need to be for this construction? As the area of extension is less than 3m2 its not subject to regs. The soil conditions are hard clay. I was going to go 8 inches...

    Cooker hood under flyover

I've gone against the canopy as I use the fly over unit for spices etc. Figured the visor would be able to be mounted to the underside of that unit rather then hidden inside it!

    Cooker hood under flyover

Hey guys, I have a 800mm half height flyover unit and I was wondering if its possible to fit a low profile (visor I guess) cooker hood underneath it? If its possible, the widest I can seem to find in this style is about 600mm, which leaves me with gaps either side! Is there a way to make...

    Unvented immersion elements

I'm thinking its a connection problem. The power draw hasn't changed! I'll have to replace the flex. I've got some here that was used for storage heaters - would it be suitable?

    Unvented immersion elements

The plot thickens - stopped working again. Took the cap off, the neutral wire (connected to the element) has completely melted and shorted it all out. I'm starting to hate these cylinders now. I thought the thermal cut off would prevent this?

    Unvented immersion elements

Sorry for the bump. I ended up buying a replacement thermostat with thermal cut out and disconnected the spades from the original thermal cut out that was built into the element unit. It's working, but it seems the temperature isn't anywhere near as hot as before and ive been slowly...

2nd had upvc porch doesn't quite fit!

Hey guys, I managed ot pick up a 2nd hand uvpc porch recently at a great price and its only a few years old. However, the dimensions aren't quite right so Im looking for some solutions to making it fit. Width wise its a simple case of a knock on either end that shouldn't be much of a...

    Unvented immersion elements

Well...we found the thermal cut off!!! It was very well hidden in between the spades for the element. Barely visible. And there was me assuming it was on the stat. Thanks guys for the help on this - only cost me £30 in the end but i've learnt plenty!
