Looking to purchase a Soldering Station

17w is going to be nowhere near enough for soldering laptop power jacks, for the reasons already mentioned regarding the large pads. I have a Weller 45w and have done a couple of such jobs for friends/family/friends-of-friends, and wouldn't want to use anything much lower in wattage than that.

    Infrared

You're thinking of a thermographic camera, which isn't really the same thing as a CCTV camera with IR illumination, which is what I assume the OP is referring to. In any case, I can't see it posing any risk to your pets.

    Dampness in an extractor fan.

Trouble is that you need to have access to a drain, which isn't always going to be that easy in a loft. As a minimum it would be sensible to use solid wall ducting such that there aren't any areas for the water to pool, and insulate it to prevent so much condensation occurring when the warm...

    NiCd Batteries

If you want rechargeable batteries with an extremely low self-disacharge rate, look at Sanyo Eneloop. I won't buy anything else any more. They'll happily sit for a year and more and still be good to go when you need them.

    Metrel Odd Fault

I had exactly the same thing with mine, although not identical symptoms. Sometimes the unit would power on, other times it wouldn't. Metrel diagnosed a faulty power button and repaired under warrantee, which was good considering that I wasn't the original purchaser, but the problem still...

Am I allowed to replace my bathroom - rules and regulations?

Supplementary bonding is what's required in the bathroom, so there will be no need to run an earth conductor back to the consumer unit. If you're referring to the main Protective Earth Bonding on incoming gas and water supplies where the enter the house then that's a different matter.

Wiring into an external garage one meter from house?

It'll be much easier to run in SWA, as using conduit underground will require you to work in metal, which isn't going to be possible short of buying a fair bit of tooling and learning how to use it. You still need to make sure you assemble the glands properly with SWA, of course, but if...

Electrical wiring along room floor perimeters?

If the building inspector is prepared to sign it off then there doesn't seem to be much worth worrying about. It sounds safer than the 150mm ceiling and corner safe zones that are in BS7671, and those are considered acceptable. Don't put polystyrene directly on top of the cables, though, as it...

is putting in a temporary consumer unit fraud?

Indeed. I think there must be a little more to the story than we're being told for the meter fitter to have reacted in the way that he did to the missing seals. Either that, or he's one of those up-his-own-youknowwhat jobsworth types who take some perverse delight in exercising their powers.

Anyone with PV-Sol Pro know how to download PhotoPlan?

Good luck, buy you might get better responses on a forum aimed solely at PV installers. FWIW, my experience of most specialist software is that it's both expensive and counter-intuitive to use. You're generally better trying to figure things out yourself than read the user manual!

Socket Wall Box - Thermaline Plasterboard

And I don't think any sane person would bother. It's not as if you're making the building any less energy efficient.

    Socket Set

I've also heard good stuff about the Halfords range. Personally, I have a Britool set in a hard carry case with a large range of standard sockets, about 10 deep sockets in some common sizes, various extension pieces, a ratchet and a T-bar. Has covered more or less every eventuality so far, and...

Opinions and advice please on the electrician I used work

It's true that T+E isn't ideal for pulling through conduit, but it wouldn't be any problem running a couple of circuits through short runs in the garage. In any case, if the whole job was done in conduit and trunking then it could be run in singles anyway.

Bathroom with no window - fitters says over-run is optional?

This may be of interest to you: However, the document does not explicitly state a requirement for the ventilation to be compliant with the current regs, only that the ventilation provided be no worse than was present before the works commenced. Will await the opinions of others on this one!

Bathroom with no window - fitters says over-run is optional?

I don't see any mention of the omitting an overrun timer just because you have a higher intermittent extract rate that required by the regs. Admittedly this is under the 'New Dwellings' heading, but much reference is made within the existing dwellings section to table 5.2a, which may be worth a...

Opinions and advice please on the electrician I used work

If you can work out how much of the quote was composed of labour charges, and you have some rough idea how much he spent on materials and how many hours work he did, then you should be able to get close to costs for the garage alone. Probably metal clad switches/sockets attached to the...

Apologies, that part of my reply was directed at the OP and probably deserved its own paragraph.

Opinions and advice please on the electrician I used work

I think it would be more than a little unfair to withhold payment. Granted, it's not a shining example of great workmanship, but there's nothing on show in the pictures that appears to be inherently unsafe. We see far worse on here, and I think ban-all-sheds has been a little vehement in his...
