    Underground T&E?

I can't disagree with that, but nor you can expect anyone to openly recommend on this forum that you should carry out in installation in contravention of BS7671  What size SWA are you looking to pull through? 100mm is a fairly generous diameter as far as the ducting goes, so unless...

    Underground T&E?

I don't think anyone here is likely to recommend that you bury T+E in your duct. While I agree in theory that the concrete may well afford enough mechanical protection, I don't think that what you plan to do is really in the spirit of the regs - though I've often thought the same about singles...

    Gas Meter Disconnected in Basement

Those prices seem to pretty well match what I paid for a new service a few years back.

Downlights - replacing 12v low voltage vs mains powered?!

I'd keep the SELV fittings, as you'll get slightly more (and a better spread of) light from them than their 230v counterparts. Just buy a replacement transformer. WRT the burnt out transformer, was it covered in insulation? If so, that would explain what happened. Likewise, the fittings also...

Device for switching Electric Shower off after a time?

The only such product I've seen is called 'Shower Manager', although I'm not sure if it's available in the UK, and it's designed primarily for fixed showerheads and fits inline with the threaded connection between the head and the outlet. If you wanted something concealed, it could be...

    Plate Warmers

Sounds like these plate warmers might be better fed from 16A outlets, each on their own dedicated circuit.

A bit of a complicated system set up

Also make sure that DHW recirculating loop is well insulated - fit the thickest lagging that's practical to do so, otherwise you'll be losing a lot of heat.

A bit of a complicated system set up

An immersion on standard rate electric definitely won't be cheaper to run than oil, but may be worthwhile on an off-peak tariff. Although a heat pump requires electricity, they generally have coefficients of performance of somewhere between 3 and 4:1, such that 1kWh of energy consumed can...

A bit of a complicated system set up

That depends on how much hot water you consume, and how often you run the central heating. Best keep an eye on your oil consumption summer vs winter to answer this one. No, there's nothing inherently inefficient in using a boiler to heat the DHW cylinder alone. There will obviously be...

New light fixture fitted (with pics) not working

Oh dear. I really must try and read the whole topic in future. Do let us know how you get on, because I can't see any way you could have miswired the fitting without the lamps either being permanently lit, or other lights elsewhere in the house not working.

    Shared soil pipe

Have exactly the same situation with a house that I own/rent - it was originally one large building that got split into two separate properties, although the waste from next door's upstairs bathroom runs directly into the bathroom opposite in my property. This isn't a problem for me as I have no...

New light fixture fitted (with pics) not working

Wiring doesn't look right to be. Unless you happen to have twin red, at least one of the black wires should either be in with the rest of the reds, or wired into the L terminal on the fitting. I suspect all you have right now is a setup where the switch links N to L on the fitting.

    Condensate pipe lagging

I'm not sure if the manufacturer of the trace heating tape would recommend using it in mildly acidic fluids, but that aside, it seems rather a waste of energy to heat an unlagged pipe. Since you may as well lag it to prevent heat escaping to the atmosphere, there's absolutely no point in putting...

recommend me a CU for my shed pls

I've never had any problem with the small Wylex metalclad units. To be honest, the vast majority of metal DBs, even those with only a few ways, are more generous with space than their plastic counterparts. If worst comes to worst, you can always gland into an adaptable box and bush it onto the...

Outside Mains Supply Electrical replacement !!

Contact the relevant utilities and ask them how deep to bury your ductwork, if they require any particular colour coding, etc etc. Take pictures of your work. That way, you shouldn't have any problems later down the line when they can't look under your driveway to ascertain if the ducting is...

    armoured cable in the garden

Well, it's your funeral if something goes wrong with the installation - terminating SWA cable needs to be done properly to ensure it is safe, so I hope your brother-in-law has some experience. The whole install will also, of course, be in contravention of part P of the building regulations and...

    armoured cable in the garden

I'd say that's a little on the small side, but assuming your brother-in-law is an electrician, why not ask him what size cable to install?

New Business Phone System - recommendations?

What Bernard mentions sound more like QoS issues on the local network - there are plenty of businesses out there who rely on VoIP, so clearly there isn't a problem with the technology when set up and used correctly.

New Business Phone System - recommendations?

There shouldn't be too much need for concern - what you're suggesting is that there is something fundamentally wrong with the core routing of the internet, which of course there isn't. As long as you can get a decent connection back to a datacentre in the London Docklands or similar area, the...

    UF heating controls

The comment you picked up on wasn't with regard to fuse sizing, but more a regulation from BS7671 that I recall stipulating the minimum size of conductor to be used in fixed wiring. I may, of course, have completely imagined it.
