Mk4 Fiesta 1.3 revs when starting

Cheapy air control valves from eBay are more trouble than they are worth. Same for air flow meters, MAP sensors and throttle position sensors. Get a decent one from a motor factors, or even a second hand one from a scrappy if funds are tight. If you know anyone with an ultrasonic cleaner...

Foundation requirements for adding second floor.

Hi all, I am after some basic "rule of thumb" type guidance. We are looking into extending above our garage. the garage is built onto the side of the house and was all built together. (around 1980). I have not applied for PP as yet, but as several others in the area have done the same thing...

    Excessive Wind

We seem to be getting the wind tonight. We live on top of a hill and get battered by the wind, but I consider myself lucky, we are dry. I can handle a night or two of wind noise, it's nothing compared to having 2 foot of water in your lounge.

MOT failure due to brake lines

My wifes car recently passed its MOT with an advisory "slight corrosion on front O/S brake pipe".... This was a lot worse than anything in your pictures. MOT guy told me if I cleaned them up and gave them a god coat of grease they will be good for another few years.

    Renewing plasterboard

I tried plastering once........... Never again. I have since come to the conclusion that all plasterers are involved with witchcraft in some way as they certainly don't seem to be bound by the same laws of physics as I do. So, I would not recommend you have a go at skimming unless you have time...

    Servicing your own car

I tend to take a rather simplistic approach to car maintenance. Engine oil and filters changed ever 12 months, everything else just checked and replaced as needed or replaced when symptoms show. If I hear a knocking sound, check bushes etc for wear and replace any with play, if it seems a...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

If you want to just sort out a captive but, get yourself a 35 quid arc welder as the weld you put on won't be doing anything once it's all assembled. If you want to do more welding, and maybe venture into fabrication and repairs, a good mig is worth every penny. I have been welding for 25...

    Bodyshop - repair or replace

I would prefer the repair. To replace roof panel requires slicing the top off the main safety cell of the vehicle. this would have originally been welded in place by incredibly accurately controlled robots, wire speed, travel, filler feed, current, penetration etc. will be all controlled as...

Plug socket branching off from a lighting circuit

I know it's not strictly correct, but I have done this with a 13A socket in my attic. It is used only for the camera part of a wireless baby monitor, or occasionally an inspection lamp when I am in the loft. I did run it from a fused connection unit with a 1A fuse installed so there is no chance...

    Chickens

I keep hens and they are great pets. I have Rhode Island reds. They also make great waste disposal units as they will eat absolutely anything. They eat my leftovers, provide me with breakfast, provide me with fertilizer to grow my dinner an warn me when anyone unknown approaches. What's not...

Advice required for wiring new immersion heater controller

If she only needs the hot water on at night, can you not just put a timer in the Eco.7 supply and a switch in the permanent supply so she has that as a boost. Or even use 2 timers, you can get em for a tenner each.

Smart tv - anyone got one and are they really that smart?

Thanks folks. Sounds like I wouldn't get much out of smart tv. We have laptops, tablets and smart phones already. I don't have much of a digital life, I don't do Facebook, Twitter, google plus or anything else like that. We don't use iplayer and the like as we have a recorder box that is set...

Smart tv - anyone got one and are they really that smart?

Ok, the time has come to replace my ancient tv. Old LCD type with florescent backlight. Been looking at LED backlit tv's. I have no desire for 3D, but I am wondering if it's worth getting a smart tv. Is it that smart? Or is it just something I will feck about with for a couple of days and...

    What type of sand?

Ok, thanks. Not worried any more, you already put my mind at rest, just curious as to what it was. His list actually stated "soft building sand" so I guess it's the same thing. Learn something new every day.

    What type of sand?

Thanks for the reassurance. However you leave me with another question, what is holm sand? I am not a builder and have never heard of it. And as for sleeping at night, I should be so lucky! My daughter is teething.

    What type of sand?

A friend of mine is having building troubles (all in another post) but she has had the correct procedure outlined by an expert and this states to use building sand as a blinding layer between hardcore and damp proof membrane when doing a floor. I recently build a conservatory and I used sharp...

    Concrete floor thickness.

Update.... Well, she waited to confront builder A with the information that builder B had given her when he came back this morning, but apparently, he turned up, looked at the holes builder B had dug, got in has van and went. She has not heard anything all day. No word back from trading...

A friend has asked me to look at her cooker for her, I'm afraid details are scarce at this stage but just wondering what to check for, It is a Bosch double cooker, plug in type on a standard domestic 13A plug. She said she put the cooker on and it tripped the power off. I assume it thre the...
