Ring main breaker tripping - can't identify cable fault

Whilst the RCD does trip ( there is one RCD (I believe it to be an RCD) serving the consumer unit which has 4 circuits (probably no more than 80m total length)), the MCB trips as well so doesn't this indicate a short somewhere? I only have a multimeter so testing capability is limited. To...

Ring main breaker tripping - can't identify cable fault

Looking for some help I have with a ring main. The 32A breaker serving this circuit tripped and wouldn't reset so by a process of elimination, I established (I think) that there is an issue with a cable running between two adjacent sockets (around 2m apart). If the live from either end of this...

Support for new floor joists in loft conversion short of supporting wall

Not sure why Tony but as long as Building Control are happy then I will be as I need to get on with the project! Don't know why I typed C25 instead of C24!! The mistake I made was not checking what was there originally (I am not a builder just an amateur "DIY" person!!) so next time (if there is...

Support for new floor joists in loft conversion short of supporting wall

So, time for an update! The structural engineer did his work over the weekend and has designed a flitch beam ( 2/295x47 C25 with 290x6mm plate) spanning the 4m so providing Building Control accept the design, the solution to the problem was not as painful as I first thought it was going to be!!

Support for new floor joists in loft conversion short of supporting wall

I will take a look tomorrow but from memory today, I think the wall plate in the window section may be accessible so I might be able to make use of this and thus only require two relatively short "binders" to cover the sections either side of the window.

Support for new floor joists in loft conversion short of supporting wall

I like the idea of that Tony - it would definitely be simpler. I will run it past the boke who did my structural calcs.

Support for new floor joists in loft conversion short of supporting wall

I appreciate that BCO will probably require some calculations but in the 1st instance do you think that what I am suggesting is feasible?

Support for new floor joists in loft conversion short of supporting wall

I am about to start a loft conversion and used my neighbours buildings regs as a basis for mine. I didn't want to use steel to support the floor so got the structural engineer to alter the neighbours design to use additional joists (20cm spacing instead of 40cm). At the time I asked him why he...

    Concrete Floor Insulation Recommendation

It was strange when the inspector saw the Jablite as it was all laid so he wouldn't have been able to tell the thickness of it - he just immediately said "we don't use that anymore". Anyway, will look for an alternative along the lines as suggested by DevilDamo

    Concrete Floor Insulation Recommendation

I built an extension around six years ago and had 100mm Jablite under the slab as insulation. This was passed by Building Regs (full plans) but when the inspector came to check before the pour he said we don't use Jablite anymore! Luckily when I pointed out that this had been signed off he let...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

Agreed- new mains pipe is the way to go if I can get someone interested enough to quote for the molding! I contacted three companies on Friday and not heard back from any of them yet! I assume/hope it's down to the current restrictions rather that the fact that I said I would dig the holes...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

So, South East Water checked the supply today and at the house it is around 3Bar and 11L/min!. In the road, although the technician didn't measure it (didn't really need to as I could see the improved flow), he reckoned it was around 25L/min. So, it looks to me as though I need to investigate...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

The annoying thing is that the previous owners had the feed pipe replaced (now 20mm plastic) which runs into my kitchen and then splits off via a dirty great big lead pipe running at the top of my kitchen wall into the neighbours house (I just replaced the last lead section in mine)! Also no...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

Ok thanks Muggles - South East Water will visit on Tuesday so I will see where I stand with the water pressure then.

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

Thanks Muggles - with hindsight I should have got the pressure tested before but anyway I have made an arrangement with South East Water this afternoon. The reason for a system rather than combi boiler was the fact that the property will have two bathrooms and I read that a system boiler may...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

Thanks Gasguru - I will be converting the loft so frost protection wouldn't be a problem but the more I think about it the more I think it would be best to have both the cylinder and boiler installed downstairs in the utility room that I will build. I still have the concern regarding water...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

Thanks Muggles. I should have said that it would be an unvented cyclinder so no need for a water supply tank. I'm in two minds as to exactly where to locate the cylinder as I am going to build a utility room downstairs (this will be quite close to the boiler which will be at high level in an...

System boiler requirement for separate hot water return and low loss header

I am renovating a house (3 bedroom Victorian semi) and am looking to have my existing boiler replaced. The house has a shared water supply and will have two bathrooms so I think I will be better going for a system rather than a combi boiler (the water pressure isn't great either). I will be...

Low pitch roof finished with conventional tiles

Yes, you never know when you might need to ask the neighbours for permission to access their property so best to keep them on side I think! One of the other houses has a tiled pitched roof covering the old toilet and uitilty area and it looks awful as it hasn't been continued across on the...

Low pitch roof finished with conventional tiles

Thanks Notch - I think you might be right on that - will consider a flat roof but will look for something other than felt I think - possibly zinc! Thanks Leofric - I have some experience on design (I have a couple of other properties which I have modernised/extended according to my designs) but...
