    Low retaining block wall footings

100mm ish concrete footing for small walls in stable ground is adequate. No need to over do it - it’s hardest holding anything back. With laying bricks flat too it’s going to be already a pretty heavy duty spec for just 300mm of soil.

Dulux One Coat Satinwood or Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood?

Anything that says ‘one coat’ is a gimmicky name to lure in naive diyers. solvent paints on woodwork etc always provide a fuller richer finish imo. Always looks good enough to eat. I don’t even bother washing brushes I use with solvent based paints. - I just chuck them.

Does this need filler or just sandpaper before I paint and varnish?

All looks in good condition. A good sand and fresh paint should do it. Does not look like there are any cracks or gaps big enough requiring filler. you’ll def be able to do this yourself and save those pennies. !

Toilet Waste Connection into Concrete Floor

No need to start digging anything up. Just yank that white connector out. It is inserted into the 4 inch waste which is nicely set into the concrete which is exactly what you want to insert your new pipe into. Put your back into it and give it a few twists back and forth and she will slide...

sub-base for plastic shed - sharp sand only or cement?

you have done the hard work - if it ends up flooding this winter it will be easy enough to jack it up on some blocks - no big deal.

    Wet room floor

So you are trying to raise the floor in the bedroom? presume its an old historic house or whatever? 40mm to much for leveling compounds - you would need loads of it too! if you really want to raise the floor then ply or chipboards if what you need glued down to floor. ply would only be...

    Exterior wall coating advice

a tragedy to put that stuff on nice brick wall of a historic victorian house. that sort of thing should be illegal! if it was my house i would not tolerate it and i would embark on the project of restoration. i think you are right that this is beyond a patch up repair job. I would start...

sub-base for plastic shed - sharp sand only or cement?

maybe swap the sand for hardcore and then put a thin layer of sand on top of that. The hardcore is more stable than sand as the mixed sizes of sharp stones and sand kind of grips everything together. It’s only a little plastic shed. The base will still outlast the shed!. But the better the...

Terraced house - how big a job is removing a chimney breast

Your image has not loaded - but my instincts tell me this is a bad idea. It’s a lot of work. Adds no value to the house. Could open a can of worms structurally and the amount of sooty dust and crap that is going to find it’s way into everything you own. However my main issue is that...

    Kitchen paint

Eggshell finish on ceiling a little unorthodox but if that is what the doctor ordered!…. matt finish on walls and ceilings is more forgiving on any imperfections and good quality Matt paints can be wiped too. don’t be fooled by any gimmicky paint ranges for specific rooms - it’s a nonsense...

    Raised deck assistance

There is a million ways to build a deck and this looks like a solid design to me. She is going nowhere. 600 deep holes for posts might be overkill on the excavations given you are only raising 300mm but if you enjoy digging holes go for it. 400-500 fine too. yeh def need noggins down the...

Bosch Oven HBA64B251B trips the electrics out

Now you have bought a new oven you have bought time to look at old one. You should still try to fix it and if you are successful you might still hear £150 for it on gumtree which can go toward your new one. And you can post your success or lack of it here for hundreds of other people to...

    Garden Patio railings/balustrade dilemma

Regs don’t apply here. Gardens walls etc not covered by regs. So making them safer, would probably, looking at your picture, be a balance between aesthetics and safety.

    Pipe from septic tank

Well it’s always nice to have things a little deeper in case you go mental with a rotavator or a pic axe one day but if it’s just garden and no vehicles going over the top then it will be fine. Your installers may have been restricted in depth options based on existing heights at each end of...

Finishing Around a Wall-Hung Toilet Frame

It would be ‘normal’ to cover across the front of the concealed cistern frame in just 12.5mm water resist plasterboard and then your tiles on that. So both your options would be pretty belt and braces. Especially the 12mm ply. The weight/pressure the hanging pans put on the wall/frame is very...

    Shuttering for circular patio base.

If you give it sufficient structural support with pegs round inside and outside or braces in between inner and outer walls, maybe a few old breeze blocks etc to keep it al in shape and trowel in your concrete mix carefully it should be fine - it does not need to be pretty - you just want that...

Bosch Oven HBA64B251B trips the electrics out

Before you mentioned it being the element, my instincts went with element too. It’s a very common part to fail and it’s easy to repair. I would be inclined to gamble and throw £25 at a new bottom oven element and see if that fixes it. If it does not and there are no other obvious reasons...
