    WHICH WOOD?

I believe MDF would be stronger (and would probably use 18mm,though it can be rather heavy)

    Self adhesive flashing

Have just built a lean-to/covered walkway outside my shed - I sealed the gap with builders silicon, then when it had cured, went over the top with flexacryl roof repair compound (black, sticky and flexible) - maybe belt-and-braces,but it works, and blends in with the existing roof.

    Extension Cables for Broadband Connection

Have just installed broadband for my dad - the recommendation was 1)Use master telephone socket (BT/AOL) 2)if using an extension lead, then 10 metre max. Stuck to both of these, and it works fine (use a good quality lead, and check the connections - these were both RJ11;CAT5 is normally RJ45)

    Timber for rabbit hutch

I would go for plywood - although I have also used OSB (oriented strand board) for making a two-level ferret hutch (no,I don't know how I got talked into it either  ) And is it for permanent outside use ? If so,felting the roof is a good move - helps the waterproofing, but out of the way...

    frog up or down

My 1960's house in the NorthEast is built from bricks with no frogs (or any other holes) But then again,I've never seen bricks with frogs around here - must be a Southern shandy-drinker thing

    Mantel

I've made a few fire surrounds, and tend to use similar system to oilman - use the uprights to support the top. e.g. - 4"x2" uprights, broad (4") side to the wall;short, corner pieces at the top - narrow (2") side fastened to upright from the rear (hidden from view) This gives a stable 6" depth...

    favourite power tool

    Most used - cordless drill (I have 5..) Favourite - I agree with Big All,the router has a magical fascination :) (But also enjoy my lathe,bandsaw,pillar drill,benchsaw,angle grinders,bench grinders,mini-drill,circular saw,jigsaw.....and hand tools as well... :D :D )

    difference between undercoat & primer

Primer is to be applied to bare wood to seal it before any other paint types. So for your pine door :- Treat any knots with Knotting (stops the sap leaking out) Prime Undercoat (may need more than one, depending on colour) Topcoat And sand down between coats (when paint is dry) for a...

    tiny or dell packages?

At work,we had "own brand" computers - as these broke, started to replace them with known labels. Last year, the whole lot were replaced by Dells - p.c.s and the central servers! In a year,I think two p.cs have had problems (out of 30) and as previously mentioned, replacement parts were there...

    quick fencing question

Personal preference, but would go for new holes - although you may need to check spacing of boards (e.g. half-board at one/both ends to stagger the posts )

    Spur off a spur?

"Ring final circuit" is the correct term for what is commonly known as a "ring circuit" - the popular way for wiring household sockets. If there is only one cable going in,it could be a spur, but it could also be the last socket on a radial. What size fuse/mcb is it on? (Rings normally...

Cordless screwdriver - the 'old' type

Think it means 48 hours time, not 48 working hours  (for some people, that could be months  )

    buying brick

Ordinary bricks are about 30-40 pence each,if bought individually, cheaper when bought in larger quantities. As Masona said, may be cheaper to buy more than you need - they are often sold in pallets of 440 or 452. Single-skin brickwork is 60 bricks per square metre, obviously double it for cavity...

    Over hanging trees - prunning

And if the branches are of a decent size, you may be able to get rid of them to a local woodturner :D (I have a lathe, and always keep an eye open for any decent bits of wood on offer/going free  )

    DIY worktop Disaster please help!!!

Yes,the joint is slightly visible, but I would be well impressed with that as a finished result for a first attempt. Well done :D

    Wanted - Ultimate Workshop Floor?

Assuming you are happy with the flatness of your floor surface, why not just use garage floor paint ? Cheap enough, easy to do,easy to sweep and keep clean. Tiles can also crack if you happen to drop brake discs or similar heavy car bits on them

Very stupid newbie question about replacing floorboard

As nstreet said -try to use same holes if you can. The reason being that if the nails missed any cables/pipes that are under you floorboards, then screws in the same holes will miss them also (unless you go for really, really long ones.. )

    MDF Fumes

No,it doesn't give off fumes. It does give off lots of dust if you cut it,and I believe it is bound together with urea formaldehyde resin, which can be irritating to the airways - so if cutting it,use a mask! And you can buy MDF primer, designed for the job :D

wont allow me to view sites

Better not to uninstall - try to turn the firewall off and see if it makes any difference (or check the security setting on it) Does it only stop you going onto secure sites ? (page addresses that start "https" rather than "http")

    Tyres, what to buy?

Or I tend to go to a couple of local tyre dealers on small industrial estates around town, rather than national chains - tyres are normally about 25% cheaper. :D
