    Recommend a quiet gas boiler

Thinking of replacing my Vaillant Turbomax boiler. The boiler is located in the garage attached to my bedroom and from the bedroom we can hear the boiler firing up. One of my main requirements in choosing a new boiler is low noise. So hopefully it won't disturb our sleep! Can you recommend...

    Boiler flue location

Sorry, I should have said that the boiler is a Vaillant combi turbomax fitted with Vaillant horizontal flue. If it is illegal to modify a flue, how can they add 90degree bends to the end of the existing flue? I understand that there is also a vertical flue option. The garage has a...

    Boiler flue location

My heating system has been installed for 8 years, and i have lived in the bungalow for 4 years. Last week my next door neighbour complained that when he opens his bathroom window the fumes from my boiler flue enter his bathroom. (I don't know why its taken him 8 years to complain about this!)...

    Vaillant Combi Boiler

Re your first problem, Vailants have a warm start facilty which basically heats up the water in the boiler so that when you turn on the hot tap you get instant hot water. this happens every hour. You can disable this. Check your instruction manual, but on my 824 combi, you turn the hot water...

Vaillant goes 'bump' in the night!

Boiler is a Vaillant Turbomax 824 installed in the garage and therefore subject to low temperatures. The boiler is quite close to our bedroom, so we can hear it fire up. On a cold night we occasionally hear the boiler fire up and within a few seconds theres a sort of 'bang' and rattling of...

    Central Heating Pump Overrun

If this has happened in the last few days, it could be the internal frost protection in the boiler particulalry if the boiler is in the garage. I think most modern boilers have two stage protection, which initially just runs the pump to keep the water moving, but if it gets colder the second...

    Vaillent boiler banging

So does this mean that the pump is not turned on and the hot water just circulates within the boiler? If this is the case I would have thought that it would only take a few seconds for the water to heat up. Does this indicate a fault in the boiler?

    Vaillent boiler banging

Have a Vaillant Turbomax combi boiler which is located in an attached garage and of course is exposed to low temperatures. On a frosty night the boiler starts up (presumably because of the internal frost protection) but after a few seconds there are several banging / knocking noises and it...

    Loft insulation and electrics

If for example I installed a thin piece of wood vertically approx one inch from the joist thus holding back the insulation and leaving an air gap above the cable. Would this be satisfactory?

    Loft insulation and electrics

I know there are several other postings on this topic, but they always seem to refer to lighting cable which is not usually too much of a problem, or shower cables which must definitly be laid over loft insulation. My query relates to the ring main. As i live i a bungalow, the ring main is...

    Block paving disaster?

I need advice ! Just had my driveway block paved and am somewhat disatisfied with the quality if the work. I think there are two areas where the work is not up to standard. 1. The excavation and laying of the sub base occured whilst I was away from home, so I did not see exactly how much...

    Gas service pipe

Thanks for your replies. I should have mentioned that my drive is being widened for two cars and my main concern is actually driving over the pipe. Is there any chance of the weight of the car fracturing the pipe?

    Gas service pipe

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes .... I live in a 1970 built house and am having my drive block paved. When the excavator arrived I advised him where all the services entered the house. The gas service pipe enters on one side of the integral garage, so he advised me he would...

Can it really be that difficult?

My daughter lives in rented accomodation and the central heating boiler has developed a problem - basically the pilot light will not stay on. Her landlord called in the 'expert' yesterday who spent a few hours tinkering with and at the end of the day declared he needed to get a new part and...

Vaillant ThermoCompact - Hot water /CH priority issue

I dont know if we are supposed to name companies on the forum, but if you do a google search on Vaillant diverter valve you will find lots of places that supply them. They seem to average around £90 but shop around and you will find one at £65 plus vat. I replaced it myself its very easy if...

New kitchen sink = no hot water

Replaced the diverter valve today and now have loads of hot water. Thanks for all the replies. My only concern is why replacing the kitchen tap caused this or maybe it was just co-incidence?

Vaillant ThermoCompact - Hot water /CH priority issue

Just had the same problem with Turbomax 824. Replaced the diverter valve - cost £77 and took about half an hour to do. I now have hot water again. Seems its a common problem with the rubber ball valve sticking.
