    Loft insulation

Will this not give you a warm loft and cold house? Kind of defeating the objective i.e. keeping the heat in the main house and living areas. My advice would be to increase insulation at the loft floor, granted in maybe a pain.

    Been offered all SKY channels

Sky will not be thrilled at the news will they. Having looked deeper it seems there are lots of sources selling these packages. No guarantee your box will work from one day to the next though. I agree this is not legal

    Been offered all SKY channels

I tried using the Sky live chat but they did not have a clue. Gave me an 08 number to ring instead. Not sure I want to bother. I was just curious if anyone else had been offered the same deal and how well it worked.

    Been offered all SKY channels

Has anyone else heard of this? I had a phone call today from an unknown source offering all Sky channels including Sky Sports and Sky Movies for £250 for the first year and then £100 for each following year. I asked if they could email me some more information and they did. It shows the fees...

Bedside lamps - how many watts?

Her in doors bought the lamps given that they "matched the walls". Not a thought to if they dimmed or not. I was given the choice of finding dimmer bulbs or sleeping on the landing :?

Bedside lamps - how many watts?

Got a pair of 1W LED golf ball bulbs last night for under a fiver. Soft white light. Covered with a lamp shade they give enough light to read by :D

Windows and doors quote - Ok or too high?

Jamie80 - I actually got a quote from the online firm you mention when I was looking for glazing about a year ago. They were actually very competitive and their windows and doors well specified. You have to send them all the measurements and openings needed. This is easier if you get a local...

Bedside lamps - how many watts?

TLC are not far from me and they are doing the 1W LED golf ball lamps for a couple of £. Will pick some up and give them a try.

Bedside lamps - how many watts?

Happy New Year :) We have a pair of bedside lamps sitting on bedside cabinets and they take 22mm bayonet bulbs. I want a very very dim light from each lamp, just enough to read a book by, not enough to light the room. Energy saver bulbs seem to go as low as 5w (20/25w Comparable Wattage)...

    Dwarf Joke

I watched "Lifes Too Short" last night with Johnny Depp and others using dwarfism for laughs and thought it was brilliant comedy. Kind of puts Biker1959's joke into context, not so offensive if you put the two side by side. Dwarf on a pole

DIY conversion of loft into bonus room

Sorry to bring up this old post. Monty did you go ahead with the job in the end? I would be interested to know if the builder did anything to strengthen the 2x4 floor joists? I would have thought laying space board and chipboard over the 2x4 joists would have added a lot of dead weight. My...

Fixing timber wall plate to interior wall

I understand what you are saying though I had to read your posts several times. In your original post you said the wall plate timber was 200x50 but you have since corrected this to say it is more like 100x50. The SE requires you to drill through the 100mm wall plate and into the party wall at...

    1930 Wooden Floors - Insulation

You may not need to lift all the floorboards if the void (crawl space) underneath is big enough to crawl around in. In our house the ground floor void is a good 1.5 to 2 feet and dry, removing two boards would allow me crawl around and fit insulation if needed. Sanded and finished our pine...

Loft - vapour barrier - fit between joists or blanket over?

What do you mean you don't think so? Work it out. Your advocating enveloping joists in a non breathable membrane. Any water vapour rising through the plasterboard or any gaps will have no where to go, it will condense on to the joists. Just because I do not agree with your suggestion does not...

Loft - vapour barrier - fit between joists or blanket over?

I am struggling to understand what you are suggesting with regards to my situation. As I have explained the ceilings are already plasterboarded how can I possibly fit a continuous vapour barrier? Laying it over the joists would not be an option as it would trap moisture against the joists. it...

Loft - vapour barrier - fit between joists or blanket over?

Hi mointainwalker, I did not mention anything about cost being an issue. In fact I was looking into products costing a lot more than £20 to £30. My concern is that it will not be one continuous barrier when laid between the joists. On the other hand laying one continuous sheet over the joists...
