    Painting coving

Do you need to sand it? Can't you just paint over the top? You can get that blue decorators masking tape that isn't very sticky. Be sure to pull it off while the paint is still wet.

    Custom MDF door frame

You're still just hanging one normal-sized door on normal hinges. It doesn't matter that there's two of them. Hmm that sounds extremely heavy to me. I'd be tempted to make it hollow.

What to seal a untreated wooden staircase with ?

What do you mean by 'treat'? Are you expecting to leave it uncarpeted? In that case a thick cost of oil-based paint (on primer) is your best bet. Varnish will wear through pretty quickly.

    UK growth goes negative...

You know, I wondered why it was raining so much this week. Turns out it was the sky falling! Seriously though, you guys do realise you can't actually measure the size of an economy to one-tenth percent accuracy, right?

Help with skirting sitting proud of door lining ?

Seems that way to me, and that will look dumb. He basically has no choice but to sand the front of the skirting so that it meets flush with the frame, allowing the door to swing normally. Or use a wedge-shaped plinth block attached to the wall, for the skirting to butt up against.

    marble fireplace surround....

Oh maybe it's been screwed to the wall. Presumably the metal straps go under the plaster, so you'll have to chisel that out to reveal the screw. It's not very heavy (they're hollow inside) so it'll move if it's going to move. No harm in trying to life one end up a bit. As long as you don't get...

    Chernobyl

My grandad told me to watch this series. He said it's the best docu/drama he's ever seen, and when a 90 year old tell you something's the best, you take notice (he was also in nuclear warning and monitoring during the cold war). He wasn't wrong, it is an exceptionally well-produced show. "We're...

    Vinyl/laminate on floating floor

Sounds perfect as-is, no need for DPM. A lot of laminate underlay includes a DPM anyway, whether you need it or not.

    marble fireplace surround....

Those surrounds are sometimes just freestanding. What happens if you try to lift the top section off? Either that or it will be chased into the plaster (doesn't look that way in the photo), in which case just chisel the plaster away.

Gaps are there to be filled. otherwise, what Woody said, or use MDF.

Johnson & Gove time to own up and tell the truth as the Leave Campaign accepts it broke the law

Suppose we hadn't lost that fictional £600M/week, where would that money be now? My guess is not in our pockets...

Record immigration figures released. Why we should get out !

That is a statement of fact, but since Sachs provides no error range the figure is still meaningless. It would be more correct if you (or Sachs) added "I reckon" on the end of your sentence.

Record immigration figures released. Why we should get out !

I have ignored nothing. We know what the benefits are -they are the very reality we have lived in for forty years. But we cannot know the costs. As Thomas Sowell points out, when it comes to ecomonic forecasting you must always counter with: "Compared to what?"

Record immigration figures released. Why we should get out !

What they don't tell you is how much it has cost Britain for being a member of the EU for forty years. Who knows how rich we could have been if we'd embraced global free trade. Without such an (impossible) comparison, that figure above is meaningless. As one shrewd commenter observed, “That’s...

Record immigration figures released. Why we should get out !

Ah, the old "immigration was the only reason anyone voted leave" fallacy. UK citizens voted leave because they don't like statism, and if they have to be bossed around by a government they'd like it at least to be situated here and staffed by other UK citizens, and run along the traditional...

    Cyclists.

Pedestrians are road users. They are in fact the primary road users. We are all pedestrians by default and the roads were built for our use, which is precisely why pedestrians have automatic right of passage at all times on all roads (except on the recently-invented 'motorways', and this applies...

    Cyclists.

I am baffled that anyone can think think a ton of metal, travelling at tens of miles per hour under self-motorisation, with dozens of horse power behind it, with a driver safely ensconsed behind impact bars and air bags, with air conditioning, heated seats and a media system, is somehow in the...

Johnson & Gove time to own up and tell the truth as the Leave Campaign accepts it broke the law

Wow if I'd known they were spending a few extra million quid on leaflets and facebook ads, that they weren't supposed to, I would never have voted leave!
