Breezeblock wall built off floorboards supported by rotten joist

Hi All In the process of renovating the WC. Have pulled everything up to find that one of the joists has been hacked in the past and is pretty much rotten through (presumably due to leakage from around the drain). To make things more difficult, the wall in the pic is built off the floorboards...

    Cracked clay WC collar

Hi all In the process of renovating the downstairs toilet. Removed the old pan and pulled up the floorboards to find that the collar on the WC waste has been broken for some time (see pics below). The clay pipe immediately bends off at ~90 degrees under the kitchen floor and outside to an...

Convert Recirculating Chimney Hood - to an external extractor

One thing to note is that there is probably a spigot on the motor inside the hood (lift off the chimney) where you should connect the pipe. I wouldn't recommend just connecting to the top of the chimney as you'll get a lot of air leakage out the back and sides. I think this explains why there...

Convert Recirculating Chimney Hood - to an external extractor

I had the same issue when we moved into our place. I used rigid pipe (less noisy than flexible metal tube) to run from the extractor outlet to the wall. I cut a hole in the side of the chimney to run the pipe. Obviously I then had a stinking great pipe across the top of the wall so I had a...

    Wet plaster smell

I have external insulation, which is weatherproof and completely non-breathable so I don't think this is necessarily true in all cases.

    Wet plaster smell

As I said, no expert... seems odd that I only get this smell in the 3 rooms which have been skimmed within the last 3 years. All the other rooms (which have render), no smell.

    Wet plaster smell

Well, it is bonkers humid at the moment. The thermometer was showing internal 23 degrees/68% RH external 18 degrees 90%. I'm no expert but these are about the same absolute humidity.

    Wet plaster smell

OP, I have noticed exactly the same issue in my house. I'm pretty certain it's not related with underfloor ventilation as I can smell it in rooms which are on the first floor. I have had 3 rooms skimmed (in gypsum) over the last 3 years or so. Whenever it's humid (normally humid in my...

    How to fix this table

Thanks for the responses all! If I do end up taking it back to bare... do you think that's just a natural Danish oil on there? The reason I ask is that on the worn patch I have been applying Danish oil and it hasn't change the colour at all. Since the table folds over I'd obviously like to get...

    How to fix this table

Hi I have a table from Laura Ashley which is approx 8 years old. When our daughter was a baby she sat at one end... being a baby she was a messy eater so there was lots of table wiping involved. As you can see from the photo it's wiped the oil/stain off the top too. We are getting a new table...

Where can I get a plaster vent?

That ebay link was a good steer. The one you posted was a bit grotty but there was a job lot of the exact ones I wanted on a link below. Funny.. I had given ebay a good search, must've been using the wrong keywords. Thanks though.. cross your fingers they don't get smashed up in the post.

Where can I get a plaster vent?

Hi all I am looking for a plaster vent. Like one of these: http://www.builderdepot.co.uk/plaster-vent-with-fly-screen-225mm-x-75mm.html Everywhere I have looked they don't deliver (or charge silly delivery fee). I'm in Kingston & Croydon (work/home). Anyone know where I can get one? Thanks Ben

    Small leak around door frame

Thanks again, very useful. Out of interest is it normal practice when installing to silicone between the frame and the cill (at the ends)? Does the silicone break down/come loose over time like it tends to in bathrooms? I am pretty sure this door was installed by the bodger who previously owned...

Thanks - that's a good idea. Will take a closer look down there and see what's going on.

    Small leak around door frame

I had some joists in my kitchen floor replaced last week due to rot. The skirting board that came off as part of the process was also completely rotten where it met the door. On closer inspection I have noticed that water is coming through the bottom left hand corner (circled in red) when I...

    Penetrating Damp from Guttering/Pipework

I think it depends on the size of the pipe. IIRC the push fit is a different diameter from the solvent weld. Measure the pipe and see if you can find solvent weld corners. TBH if putting solvent weld on there involves you replacing the whole pipe run and pulling up floor inside I wouldn't...

    Penetrating Damp from Guttering/Pipework

If it were me I'd just unscrew it from the wall, fix up the pointing and fill any deep holes in the bricks with mortar, swap out the push fits for solvent welds and put it all back with the fixings you already have (maybe use new screws). No need to drill new holes unless it has to go back in...
