    Insulating my Victorian suspended floor

As long as you have good enough airflow (via airbricks) under your floor, then IMHO you don't need to allow any 'breathability' between above and below the floor. I think rockwool is generally specified because it's cheaper than Celotex/Kingspan. I am intending to do this job to my own...

    Insulating my Victorian suspended floor

Why would you bother with the breather membrane and not just fit the celotex directly? Can't see what benefit it would add since the Celotex is foil backed anyway.

Damp Proof Course - What to do ?

I have a very similar problem, which I am currently in the process of rectifying. 1930s house, solid walls, bit of rising damp along one side where the previous idiot owners have laid 2 layers of tarmac over the original concrete path, partially blocking one airbrick. I would say that the...

    Fixings into external insulated wall

That's really interesting! TBH I was disappointed with our green deal ECO offer of 4k - I was expecting more. What puzzles me is that you had an offer of 7k on a smaller house (read: generates less CO2). I am currently paying £250 a month DD for gas and electricity - how do your bills...

    Fixings into external insulated wall

I have been toying with having the same done to my house (but with 60mm Phenolic). 200mm would pop out beyond my roofline  At the moment am holding off until I remortgage because of the cost (£24k) The dudes that quoted/surveyed said that they would fix wooden blocks to...

What sounders would fit in a secom bellbox?

Hi all, I have obtained an old unworking Secom bellbox and would like to retrofit a new sounder inside the box. My intention is to have a bells only system but one that looks like it's monitored to anyone unaware. Does anyone know of a new external sounder I could dismantle that would...

    DPC level and floor joists

Hi folks, Sure this has been answered before but after a bit of googling cannot find any info. I have a 1930s solid wall house which is rendered all over and also has a rendered plinth along the lower section of the walls which finishes above the air bricks. The top of the plinth is...

Rough cost for dormer removal & rebuild

Thanks for the comments Dann. Why not? If I just want the dormer box removed but stairs to loft left in-situ (along with hole in ceiling) for me to deal with after the dormer is gone and the roofers are done, why is this not an option? If you saw the conversion maybe you'd think differently...

Can you convert monitored to unmonitored alarm?

Thanks for the advice folks! Had a browse of a G-12 manual online. Seems straightforward enough to install and set up. One question: am I likely to run into any issues where I would need a code (e.g. engineer code) that I would be unable to obtain because I'm not a pro? Thanks

Can you convert monitored to unmonitored alarm?

Yeah, I had thought of this as an option too. Am also considering installing a new one myself. Am pretty competent and work in security (admittedly CCTV) industry. What would people recommend? Honeywell stuff always seems pretty reliable. What panels are best? Ta.

Can you convert monitored to unmonitored alarm?

Hi, Moved into a new place with an alarm from what looks like 1950. Bakelite n all. Needs replacing. Am considering whether having an external bellbox from the likes of ADT or SECOM is a good thing - any burglars wary of monitored alarms. Anyway, these obviously have a monthly...

Rough cost for dormer removal & rebuild

Hi all, After a bit of advice about what I should expect to pay to have the box dormer removed in the following picture and roof returned to standard construction. Price for removal of dormer and floor only (all other internal works I can do myself). Location is Surrey. Thanks, Ben

    80mm pencil/bullnose skirting

The only reason it matter sis because of the height of the sockets. Too high and it will be banging into the sockets (they are quite low). At 94mm it's touching the bottom of the sockets. Should have moved them up, but it't too late for that now (all replastered and painted) Actually I...

    80mm pencil/bullnose skirting

Hi folks, In the process of renovating a 1930s place and am replacing skirting board in a few rooms (many layers of paint, damaged, stained underneath). Problem is that it's 80mm tall bullnose style. All I can find is 69 or 94mm. Anyone know where I can get some 80mm without having...

Picture rail height when door & window nearly same heigh

The ceilings are about 45cm above the rail. I put it up over the weekend. This is the only room where the top of the window is roughly the same as the architrave. All other rooms the windows are taller so the rail goes into the reveal about 9/10 way up. I know the original was aligned with...

Picture rail height when door & window nearly same heigh

Thanks for the replies - good point about the curtains. And foxhole all the rooms originally had picture rails, I'm just restoring to original. I think since the room has been replastered it's thrown the bottom of the window reveal out by a bit which has caused the difference.

Picture rail height when door & window nearly same heigh

Hi Folks, Done a bit of searching but no luck. In the process of restoring a 1930s house from the damage that the previous retarded owners did. One bedroom had been converted into a shower room (complete with hacked up floor joists for the shower waste... !) We have curvy ceilings on...
