Damp problem possible multiple causes - please help!

I recently moved into a property where the buildings survey pulled up few sections of amp. Before we moved in we had a damp proofing company have a look and quote to fix it. We then knocked this much off the asking price. When we actually moved in I paid for an independent damp survey. It...

Venting multiple flues in disused chimneys

Dann09: Thanks for the comments but I have to disagree that you can see organic debris on that flat roof. This pic is from google streetview and the resolution is so low there is no way you can see that. You may be right that there is the likelihood of it up there, but you can't see it...

Venting multiple flues in disused chimneys

There is currently damp in the chimneys. The paint on the chimney breasts is falling off (you can't see it from this shot - it's on a 3rd chimney stack round the back). AFAIK it's common knowledge that if you block off a chimney (fireplace and top), you need to vent it to allow any moisture...

Venting multiple flues in disused chimneys

dann09: No - they are from a previous owner of the house who was a (bad) DIY nut and installed the loft room. He used wooden beams to support the floor and they stick out through the tiles. The felt caps are there to stop the wood rotting! Great huh? The whole loft room will be removed over...

Venting multiple flues in disused chimneys

Hi, Recently moved into a 1930s property that has 3 chimneys, all of which have been cut back to below roofline. The fireplaces have all been blocked up. Our survey (and other people since) have said we need to install vents to vent the stack. No problem. I'd like the vents installed on...

Quick Q - cost to REMOVE loft conversion!

Hi All, Slightly odd question. We've moved into a 1930s house that had a terrible DIYer owner before who had added a dormer on the back of the house in the loft. The house is a bit small for the loft conversion so he brought the stairs into the master bedroom. It's ugly, inconvenient...

Blocked rainwater drains on pre-1937 house?

Hi, Have moved into a new house and discovered that 2 of the 3 rainwater drains are blocked by root ingress. One has collapsed. As far as I know, the rainwater drains into the foul sewer. This is what the survey said and would be consistent with traps on each rainwater drain. I've had a...

House takes ages to heat up

Thanks for the link. Other thing we are considering is external wall insulation. There are large chunks of render that need replacing on the house anyway. Gonna hold out to see what the green deal looks like when it's introduced in January.

House takes ages to heat up

Wowzers.. it's 350 now? Last I read it was 270! Thanks for spotting the error. Should be fixed up to say Surrey now.

House takes ages to heat up

Just seen Agile's response. Loft insulation is on average 70mm, but a bit patchy in places. House is also a bit draughty - particularly the front door and cupboard under the stairs where the meters are (and where there are holes in the floor for services. Considering a porch for the...

House takes ages to heat up

Yeah - insulation is high on the list of todos.... as is draught proofing. The radiators pre-date the boiler by a long way. Last w/e when we had a frost (on top of a hill here in South London) it was on from 7AM and didn't hit 21 until about 4PM! As I said the boiler isn't using much...

House takes ages to heat up

Everything seems to be balanced OK - the rads all get hot at about the same time. The rads are all toasty. As dcawkell said the curved rad has no convector on it. Hav considered a double here but it's curved and the best quote I've got for that is £910

1930s house with original front door - add enclose porch?

We'll keep the current door where it is (I think building regs require that anyway). So the porch will be used for storing coats, shoes, etc, but also to reduce draughts and try to make the house warmer (the current door is old, warped and poorly fitting). Yeah - this is the issue with the...

1930s house with original front door - add enclose porch?

Thanks for the response Chunky. How deep was your loft insulation before? Ours is mostly 70mm but 0mm  in some places. Trying to get that done via one of the free deals on at the moment. (Will DIY if it drags on too long). Thanks for posting the pic - we're thinking of doing it in...

House takes ages to heat up

Hi, Just moved into a 1930s detached with solid walls (no cavity). It has a Worcester Greenstar 37Cdi boiler (just a couple of years old I think), and a random selection of radiators around the house. Last w/e the outside temp got down to 2 degrees and even with the CH on ALL day the...

Whether or not to put external doors on open porch?

Yeah I know - thought I'd try waking them up on the off chance though. People like to talk about their experiences :)

1930s house with original front door - add enclose porch?

Hi, I have just moved into a 1930s detached house from a 1990's semi so am feeling the cold a lot more now we are seeing the temperatures drop. The house has an original big heavy door with leaded lights (single glazed) down both sides and across the top. The door opens onto an open porch...

What did you do in the end? I'm in the same situation. Thanks!

Totally blocked rainwater drain (beyond repair)

Ha! yep, had also considered that now that the weather is turning a bit. I've seen some 2" hose in screwfix that might do the trick and be thick enough to resist freezing and blockages (hopefully  ) Cheers, Ben
