A local building supplier gave me some free corrugated asbestos sheets in the mid 2000's, they couldn't sell them and were stuck with them.
I had a couple of cracked sheets on my 1970's garage. Took them off with the PPE and water etc.
The replacement ones, I painted to seal them, and managed...
When I try to send a payment through my online bank webpage they make me log into the app on the phone to authorise the payment. Probably to increase security.
So it's quicker to pay directly through the app, this means I use the web page less often, where I used to remember the log in...
Surely, by tilebacker board, they mean the foam sandwich type. Marmox, Wedi, Jackoboard.
Not Hardie board.
That would be my answer, it's available in 10,12, 20mm. Glue it straight on and then skim over it.

Saves having to deal with a tangle of wires...
Complicated problem. Lots of variables. 15mm acoustic plasterboard will provide the most mass, but fixing directly could cause transmission of low frequencies.

Well it is a **** show, and requires a radical solution. I'd use a 6mm and 12mm cement board, and get creative with the tile adhesive, it would be slow and painful, more of an arts and craft project rather than quickly lashing some tiles up in a hurry.
It's what I've done with uneven and...
You could use a Stanley knife. (Not one where the blade is likely to close on you)
Use a brand new blade. Score out the shape you want, then keep going over it until you get through.
Or use a drill with a cheap hole saw attachment. Go slow, don't push hard. Can be bought for under a tenner...
