Sanding floors or painting - which first?

Hi, Working on a living room where I have floors lifted, cables being run, small area plastering and all sorts. Once all of the uproar and messiest stuff is done I will be left with floor sanding and varnishing and painting. Just wondering from people who have done both together which they would...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

I still think its a bit of a stretch to say that I hadn't told anyone it was a ring circuit, it was in my first post. I was confident that it was a ring circuit, and I wasn't looking for clarification on that point, I was asking about the spur of to the wall light. The only reason I mentioned...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

Accepted. I should have said rare for domestic mains socket circuits. This is what I meant by ring circuits seeming strange if you are not familiar with them. Unless it was 3 phase, pretty much everything I worked on in industry, and on cars even, was what in a UK house you might refer to as a...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

I had read that radial circuits were rare in the UK (although that info might be out of date), but I was aware that it was the norm in other countries. I lived in Ireland and the USA for a 10 year period, and had some electrical work on machinery in industry, but I hadn't really done any work on...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I have a few options now. I think I might run the spur from the load on the existing switch to a socket behind the AV equipment, so that I can switch the whole thing on and off from the sofa, then connect the light to the supply side of the existing switch...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

What would make you think its a radial circuit? My understanding is that radial circuits are rare in the UK. A while back on another socket in the same circuit I measured 220V on both cables with the wires disconnected, so I took this as confirmation that it was a ring circuit.

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

Thanks, that's a great tip. That also makes me think that I could alternatively take the socket from the load side of the switch, then use that switch to turn all the AV equipment on or off at once, and I could just put a plug on the wall light cable and plug it into the same socket strip if I...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

Thanks both for your replies. Now while I am asking... :sneaky: If I was to replace the light switch with a 16 amp fcu, could I also connect a socket to it. i.e. fused switch is on the ring main, with the socket and a light switch both coming off it, or am I talking crazy now!? I only ask...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

The lighting cable looks a size down from the ring cable. I think that the ring cable looks like 4mm twin and earth, so the lighting cable might be 2.5mm. I had been thinking that a circuit coming off a spur is usually fused, either with a fused switch, or by the fuse in the plugs if its a...

Wall lights on a spur from ring circuit

Being doing some decorating/running speaker cables behind walls, and in the process have noticed that the wall lights are powered from a switch which is part of the the ring circuit for the sockets in that room. This is effectively just an unfused switch with the cable for the light connected...

Running a plug in cable behind a wall?

Thanks very much Sureitsoff. I couldn't think of any reason why it would be illegal, but I saw from some websites that its illegal in the USA, so thought it best to check if it was legal here. The cable will be coming through right behind the units which will be flush to the wall, so not...

Running a plug in cable behind a wall?

Hi there, I wonder of one of the electricians could comment on whether it is allowable to run a power, cable, terminated with a plug through a wall? Context is, a 13amp socket near ground level, and a projector on a shelf about one metre above, and amp about 0.5 metre up, so that both cables...

    Hard stop filler?

There are a few videos on you tube, if you just search "hard stop filler" or "hardstop filler". Below are a couple: The guy in this video mixes hard stop filler to plaster over imperfections found after the lining paper is on. This one is filling the gaps in lining paper, although I'm not...

    Hard stop filler?

Hi, I'm fitting Wallrock lining paper, for a painted finish, in my old house with a fairly odd curved feature. Due to the competing angles, I will have no chance in getting a close butt join in certain places and the joins will be at different, non vertical angles. I've noticed a number of...

Correct config for washing machine drain without sink

Hi, I have just removed a sink that we don't use in a utility room, but still need to drain the washing machine into the waste pipe. Hoping that someone could confirm if I have the correct configuration. Firstly, I am presuming that I would need to have a u-bend? Secondly, with the sink gone...

    Flush lever problem

Thanks for all the replies. Spraying the metal part with gold paint has worked a treat. Time will tell if it lasts but hopefully should be fine.

    Flush lever problem

Hi footprints - I've edited and the link seems to work now. Hi sircerebus666 - thanks, good idea. I just ordered some gold spray paint and I am going to try spraying the metal part of the handle. If that fails, I'll get a new flush valve and the adaptor seal.

    Flush lever problem

Hi all, My wife has bought a toilet with a chrome flush lever, presuming that she could just order a gold/brass one separately. When both toilet and lever arrived separately yesterday and I tried to install I found that the toilet was a cable type with a spigot on the lever, and the lever was a...
